Football's Valiant Second Half Comeback Falls Short

EUREKA, Ill. - The Rockford University football team (1-3) fell 48-29 in its season finale on Saturday at Eureka College (2-2). The Regents trailed 34-7 midway through the third quarter, but were able to get back within two scores on multiple occasions during the remainder of the game. Rockford scored 14 straight points to close out the third quarter and make it a 34-21 game. After a Eureka touchdown to begin the fourth, the Regents answered with their third touchdown of the half and cut the Red Devil advantage to 41-29. Unfortunately, Eureka running back Joe Hughes found the end zone for the fourth time late in the game, to seal the 48-29 Eureka win.

  • The Red Devils scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions and took a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Eureka moved the ball deep into Regent territory and seemed as though it might score on its fourth straight drive of the game, but Rockford's Jamal Seymore Jr. intercepted Nathan Garard's pass in the end zone and returned it 78 yards deep into Eureka territory.
  • The Regents then took advantage of a pair of pass interference penalties, which ultimately set up first and goal from the Red Devils' 7-yard line.
  • One play later, LaVar Johnson Jr. found the end zone on a 7-yard touchdown run, to make it a 21-7 game.
  • The game remained 21-7 until late in the first half, when Eureka's Joe Hughes scored his second rushing touchdown of the game. The point after was no good, as Eureka now led 27-7.
  • The final big play of the quarter came with less than a minute remaining in the half. With Eureka again driving, Martiez Bowins intercepted a Nathan Garard pass at the Regents' 35-yard line, to end the first half.
  • The Regent defense was once again able to come up with a big play on the Red Devils' second possession of the second half. Ja'uan Joiner recovered a Joe Hughes fumble inside the RU 5-yard line, to end the scoring threat and give the ball back to the Rockford offense.
  • Unfortunately, Rockford went three and out on the ensuing possession and had its punt blocked to give the ball right back to Eureka with excellent field possession.
  • Eureka needed just three plays to punch it in and extend its lead to 34-7.
  • However, Rockford slowly began to chip away at the Eureka lead over its next couple of possessions.
  • The Regents methodically moved the ball down the field on their ensuing drive, until Rockford faced a fourth and four at the Eureka 46-yard line. Quarterback Samuel Cade Jr. connected with Titus Cannon for seven yards to pick up the first down and keep the drive alive.
  • Two plays later, Cade found Maurice Williams for a 39-yard touchdown strike, the first of his collegiate career. Rockford would convert the two-point try and make it a 34-15 game.
  • After a quick three and out by the Red Devils, Rockford got the ball back with a chance to further trim the Eureka lead.
  • Rockford quickly moved the ball down the field through the air, including a 40-yard completion from Samuel Cade Jr. to Joey Owens
  • With the Regents now facing a fourth and two just outside the red zone, the Red Devils were flagged for pass interference to keep the drive alive.
  • LaVar Johnson Jr. would capitalize with his second touchdown of the day, this one also from seven yards out. Unfortunately, the two-point conversion attempt failed, as Rockford now trailed 34-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Unfortunately, Eureka was able to score on its ensuing drive and once again make it a three-possession game. The Red Devils moved the ball down the field entirely on the ground, before scoring on a bizarre set of fumbles on the final play, which ultimately resulted in a 6-yard scoop and score by Eureka's Ben Bernabei.
  • The next big play for Rockford came courtesy of its punt coverage unit. After a three and out by the offense, Rockford forced a fumble on special teams, which was recovered by Keith Oldigs at the Eureka 26-yard line.
  • Six plays later, Samuel Cade Jr. found Joey Owens in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown strike. Rockford would again convert the two-point attempt, to make it 41-29.
  • Unfortunately, Eureka scored a touchdown and chewed up over eight minutes on its next possession to seal the 48-29 victory.

  • Samuel Cade Jr. finished with 179 yards passing and 2 touchdowns.
  • LaVar Johnson Jr. carried the ball 24 times for 76 yards and 2 scores. Johnson becomes just the third running back in school history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in his career (2,004). He is also tied for second all-time in rushing touchdowns (22), third in rushing attempts (431), fourth in total touchdowns (22), fourth in all-purpose yards (2,189), fifth in points scored (136) and seventh in total offense (2,050).
  • Joey Owens had 4 receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown.
  • Maurice Williams hauled in 2 passes for 44 yards and a score.
  • Jallen Bashford tallied a season and game-high 15 tackles, including 10 solo tackles. Bashford is now second all-time in school history with 351 career tackles (Seth Swinehart, 354).
  • Jamal Seymore Jr. and Martiez Bowins each intercepted a pass.
