LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team (8-16, 0-6 NACC) was swept in its home doubleheader on Sunday afternoon by the Benedictine University Eagles (17-6, 8-0 NACC). The Regents struggled on the offensive side of the ball in the first game being without a hit until the seventh inning and eventually falling 7-0. Errors hindered the Regents in the second game leading to big innings from the Eagles and dropping game two 16-2 in eight innings.
Game 1: Benedictine 7 Rockford 0
- The Eagles jumped out to a quick four-run lead in the second inning with the help of a Regent error and a single to center field by the Eagles.
- Game one was locked at 4-0 through the third and fourth innings with great pitching from both teams.
- However, Benedictine tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning with a three-run homer to left field to lead 7-0 over Rockford.
- Benedictine's Justin Sosa was working on a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Ryan Smith broke it up with a single to left field securing the Regent's first hit of the game.
- The Eagles held the Regents to just two hits going on to take game one 7-0.
Game 2: Benedictine 16 Rockford 2 (8 innings)
- Game two was scoreless through three innings of play with both pitchers throwing very well.
- Rockford jumped out in front in the bottom of the fourth to lead 2-0. The center fielder made an error on Phil Hyland's single allowing the ball to roll to the fence for Christian Garcia and Phil Hyland to score.
- The Eagles tied it in the fifth inning with a two-run homer to right-center.
- Benedictine took the lead in the seventh inning, scoring four runs from a homer, a double and a ground out.
- With the Eagles up 6-2 heading into the eighth inning, the Eagles continued to tack on runs and control the game. Benedictine closed out the game with a 10 run eighth inning, taking a 16-2 lead over the Regents.
- Rockford was held to no runs in the bottom of the eighth for Benedictine to win game two 16-2.
