Men's Volleyball Breaks Numerous School Records to Conclude the Season

MADISON, Wis. - The RU men's volleyball team (3-9. 3-8 NACC) concluded its season with a 3-0 defeat on Friday evening at Edgewood College (2-11, 2-8 NACC). Despite the loss, Rockford finished the year winning three of its last five matches and set a plethora of school records. The Regents set or tied two individual single-game records on Friday and broke one team record. Jett Stewart broke the single-game record for digs per set (4.00), James Davenport tied the record for kills per set (3.67) and the Regents broke the team record for digs per set (14.33). Rockford also broke six single-season team records and seven single-season individual records. Jett Stewart broke the RU single-season records for assists (295), assists per set (7.02), service aces (16) and service aces per set (0.38). James Davenport broke the single-season records for kills (92), kills per set (2.79) and hitting percentage (0.152). As a team, Rockford broke the single-season records for kills (368), kills per set (8.76), assists (341), assists per set (8.12), attack attempts per set (27.26) and blocks per set (0.99). 

  • Rockford opened the match on a 4-1 run to give the Regents an early lead. Jeremy Weaver tallied the Regents' only kill over that span. 
  • With Rockford still leading 11-9, Edgewood went on a 6-0 run to take the largest lead for either team thus far. 
  • The Regents answered back with a 3-0 run of their own, led by kills from Jeremy Weaver and James Davenport to cut the Edgewood lead down to 15-14. 
  • Unfortunately, the Eagles outscored the Regents 10-4 down the stretch and took the opening set 25-18. 
  • The Regents scored the first three points of the second set to once again jump out to an early lead. James Davenport recorded the lone kill during the run. 
  • Rockford would extend its lead to four points at 6-2 after back-to-back kills from Nathan Vana
  • The Regents' lead got as high as five points before the Eagles once again began to make a run midway through the second set. 
  • With Rockford out in front 11-6, Edgewood went on a 10-3 run to take its first lead of the second set. 
  • The Eagles were able to extend their lead to as many as three points at 22-19. 
  • However, Rockford scored the next three points, capped off by a James Davenport kill to tie it at 22-22. 
  • The two teams would trade the next two points, before Edgewood scored the final two points, to take the set 25-23 and grab a 2-0 advantage. 
  • The third set was the closest of them all, with neither team leading by more than three points at any time.
  • Rockford's first lead of the set came at 4-3 after a 2-0 run, which was capped off by a James Davenport kill. 
  • The Regents built their lead up to as many as three points at 10-7, following kills from Jett Stewart and Matthew Seger
  • With Rockford still leading by three at 14-11, the Eagles ran off four straight points to retake the lead for the first time since it was 5-4. 
  • Following a Regent timeout, Nathan Vana tied the score with his second kill of the set. 
  • However, Edgewood scored the next three points to retake the lead at 18-15. 
  • Unfortunately, Rockford was never able to regain the lead, dropping the third set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

  • James Davenport finished with a team-high 11 kills and 4 digs. 
  • Jett Stewart tallied 23 assists, a team-high 12 digs, 2 kills, 2 aces and 2 block assists. 
  • Nathan Vana added 6 kills, 7 digs, 1 assist and 1 block assist. 
  • Matthew Seger had 5 kills, 8 digs and 1 assist.
