VERONA, Wis. - The Rockford University softball team (17-13, 7-7 NACC) returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a crucial road sweep at Edgewood College (9-25, 1-13 NACC). Rockford was down to its final out in the opener, before Paige Korsan and Gretchen Schrubbe strung together a two-out RBI double and an RBI single, to give the Regents a 4-3 win. Senior pitcher Mikayla Seay dominated the Eagles in game two, allowing just one unearned run en route to a comfortable 5-1 victory and a sweep. The wins move the Regents back into third place in the NACC South Division.
Game 1:
- Gretchen Schrubbe got things started with leadoff home run in the top of the first and gave her team a quick 1-0 lead.
- Rockford added another single run in the top of the second, to extend its lead to 2-0. Rockford managed just one hit in the inning, but took advantage of a wild pitch, an error and a passed ball to manufacture its second run of the day.
- However, Edgewood answered right back with an unearned run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, to cut Rockford's lead in half.
- The scored remained the same until the bottom of the fourth. Edgewood used a pair of hits, including a two-out RBI single, to knot the game at 2-2.
- The Eagles would then take their first lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth. Following a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt, Analiese Glawe crushed an RBI double down the right field line, to put Edgewood in front 3-2. Fortunately, Rylee Klema was able to retire two of the next three batters and keep it a one-run game heading into the seventh.
- Breanna Collins got the top of the seventh started with a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
- The Eagles were able to retire the next two batters, leaving the Regents with just one out remaining.
- Fortunately, Paige Korsan came through with a clutch two-out RBI double, scoring Collins, and tying the game at 3-3.
- One batter later, Gretchen Schrubbe laced an RBI single through the right side of the infield, to give Rockford a 4-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
- Edgewood did manage a leadoff single in its half of the frame, but Rylee Klema was able to induce a 5-4-3 double play and an infield popout, to end the game and secure the dramatic win.
Game 2:
- The Regents scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take an early lead in game two.
- Following a walk and two quick outs, Emily Cox belted her fourth home run of the season and gave the Regents a 2-0 lead.
- Edgewood was able to get runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but RU starting pitcher Mikayla Seay buckled down and held the Eagles scoreless each time.
- Rockford then added two more runs in the top of the fifth.
- Following a quick out to start the inning, Annaka Bartz and Emily Cox delivered a single and a walk, to place runners on first and second with one out. One batter later, Mikayla Seay singled back up the middle, scoring Bartz, and making it a 3-0 game. Breanna Collins followed with an RBI single of her own, to give Rockford a 4-0 advantage.
- Rockford would tack on one more run in the sixth. Emily Down and Jocelyn Callahan each singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. Callahan then stole second and Down scored on throwing error by the Edgewood catcher, to make it 5-0.
- Edgewood was finally able to score an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough, as Rockford cruised to a 5-1 victory.
Game 1:
- Gretchen Schrubbe finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored.
- Paige Korsan went 1-for-3 with a double. She also drove in the game-tying run and scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.
- Rylee Klema threw her ninth complete game of the season, to earn the win and move to 7-6 on the year. She allowed just two earned runs, while striking out four.
Game 2:
- Mikayla Seay tossed her team-leading 11th complete game of the season. Seay allowed just one unearned run, walked none and struck out three, to improve to 8-5 this season.
- Emily Cox finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs driven in and two runs scored.
- Annaka Bartz was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Mikayla Seay went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Emily Down finished 2-for-3.
- Breanna Collins went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The RU softball team returns home on Sunday, April 25 for two more games against Edgewood College. First pitch is set for 4 PM at Mercyhealth Sportscore Two.
