Regents Downed by Scarlet Hawks

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team (9-19, 1-9 NACC) was swept at home Sunday evening against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks (12-6, 7-5 NACC). The Regents tied the Scarlet Hawks in the fifth inning of the first, however, the Scarlet Hawks scored in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to win game one 11-6. Rockford struggled to string together multi-run innings in the second game only scoring three runs in the third inning to lose 10-3.

Game 1: Illinois Tech 11 Rockford 6

  • The first inning got off to a rough start for the Regents in the field, allowing four runs to score on five walks, two errors and a hit.
  • The Regents cleaned up its defense not allowing a run in the second inning and scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Troy Tucci doubled to right-center to score Tyler Peake, while Zach Hunter scored on an error by the third baseman.
  • Rockford added on another run in the bottom of the third from a wild pitch that scored Tyler Peake to trail Illinois Tech 4-3.
  • Tyler Peake hit a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth that scored Iszak Mestas to tie the game 4-4.
  • Illinois Tech regained the lead in the sixth inning scoring a run from a sacrifice fly to right field and tacked on two more runs in the seventh to lead 7-4.
  • The Scarlet Hawks continued to add on in the eighth inning scoring another run from a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • The Regents made a push in the bottom of the eighth with Christian Garcia crushing a two-run homer to left field keeping the game close being down by two runs, 8-6.
  • Unfortunately, Illinois Tech scored three more runs in the ninth while holding off Rockford to win game one 11-6.

Game 2: Illinois Tech 10 Rockford 3

  • Game two started just like game one with the Scarlet Hawks the first to strike with a four-run first inning.
  • Both teams were held to no runs in the second inning, but the Regents made a come back in the bottom of the third scoring three runs from Christian Garcia's single through the left side to score Tyler Peake and Jared Herzog scoring on an error by the left fielder. Iszak Mestas roped a double down the left-field line to score Christian Garcia for the final run of the inning.
  • With Illinois Tech leading 4-3 it increased its lead to 8-3 by tacking on four runs in the fourth inning.
  • The Scarlet Hawks never looked back, scoring two runs in the sixth inning and holding the Regents runless for the rest of the game going on to win game two 10-3.

Game 1:

  • Tyler Peake recorded a season-high 4 for 5 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and an RBI.
  • Christian Garcia went 2 for 4 with a homer, 2 RBI's and a run scored.
  • Iszak Mestas went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
  • Troy Tucci went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Game 2:

The Rockford University baseball team returns to action Wednesday, April 28 at Aurora University. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 3 PM.
