Seay's Walk-Off Grand Slam Gives Regents Momentum in Sweep Over Stars

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (21-15, 11-9 NACC) swept the Dominican University Stars (11-18, 7-13 NACC) in exciting fashion Saturday afternoon. Game one was tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh when Mikayla Seay hit a two-out walk-off grand slam giving Rockford the 6-2 win. The Regents kept dominating in the second game scoring 12 runs, winning 12-6. The Regents have also broken the school records for doubles with 83, homeruns with 16, stolen bases with 54 and hit by pitch with 19. After the sweep against Dominican, Rockford has secured the #3 seed in the NACC South Division Tournament and will play Benedictine University at 7 PM Thursday, May 6.

Game 1: Rockford 6 Dominican 2

  • Rockford wasted no time putting up a run in the first inning from Gretchen Schrubbe hitting a single to right field to score Mikayla Seay.
  • The Regents crossed the plate again in the second inning when Jocelyn Callahan hit an inside the park homer to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Stars came shooting back with two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
  • With great pitching and outstanding defense, both teams were held to no runs through the fifth and sixth innings.
  • In the bottom of the seventh with two outs and bases loaded, Mikayla Seay stepped to the plate. Seay smacked a walk-off grand slam to center field giving the Regents a 6-2 win over the Stars.

Game 2: Rockford 12 Dominican 6

  • Dominican was the first to jump out in front this time scoring two runs in the first inning.
  • However, the Regents quickly answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Jocelyn Callahan singled up the middle to score Emily Cox, Breanna Collins scored on a ground out and Paige Korsan roped a double to center field to score Michaela Spanbauer and Jocelyn Callahan.
  • Rockford tacked on three more runs in the second inning taking an early 7-2 lead. Emily Cox and Breanna Collins both hit doubles scoring Jessica Kearns and Emily Cox. Breanna Collins later came across the plate to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • The Regents stayed hot scoring another three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jessica Kearns drove in Paige Korsan with a single up the middle, Annaka Bartz singled to third base to score McCathran Andrew and Emily Cox singled up the middle to score Annaka Bartz.
  • Dominican started to chip away with two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to trail 10-5.
  • Rockford scored again in the fifth inning with two runs from a fielder's choice that scored Jessica Kearns and Annaka Bartz stealing home.
  • The Stars scored a run in the sixth inning but was shut down by the Regents as Rockford went on to win game two 12-6.

Game 1

  • Mikayla Seay had a monstrous game going 3 for 4 with a walk-off grand slam, 2 doubles, 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
  • Jocelyn Callahan went 2 for 3 with a homer, a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
  • Gretchen Schrubbe went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
  • Rylee Klema picked up her ninth win of the season pitching a complete 7 inning game giving up 2 runs with only 1 earned.

Game 2

  • Emily Cox went 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
  • Paige Korsan went 1 for 3 with a double, 2 RBI's and a run scored.
  • Jocelyn Callahan went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI's, a stolen base and a run scored.
  • Breanna Collins went 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI and 2 runs scored.
  • Annaka Bartz went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI.
  • Mariah Martinez picked up her second win of the season pitching a complete 7 inning game, striking out 6 without allowing a walk.

The RU softball team returns to the field Monday, May 3 at home against Mount Mary University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 PM.
