Baseball Sweeps Dominican to Move into Fourth Place

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team (12-22, 4-12 NACC) picked up a huge road sweep on Sunday over Dominican University (9-24, 4-12). The Regents dominated the Stars from the get-go in the opener. Rockford pounded out 11 hits and held Dominican hitless through four, as the Regents cruised to an easy 11-1 win in seven innings. Both teams led at various points in game two, but it was the Regents who used a pair of three-run innings to propel themselves to a 9-4 victory. Rockford's sweep over Dominican on Sunday vaults the Regents into a tie for fourth place in the NACC South Division, and currently puts the Regents in possession of the fourth-seed in the NACC South Division Tournament because of Rockford's 3-1 record against the Stars.

Game 1

  • Rockford was in control from start to finish in the opener.
  • Starting pitcher Jared Herzog was absolutely dominant the entire game. Herzog held the Stars hitless through four innings and retired 11 straight batters heading into the fifth.
  • The RU offense was able to stretch a run across in the second, in support of Herzog's effort on the mound.
  • Troy Tucci and Peyton McCray strung together back-to-back one-out singles, to put runners on first and second. After an error moved the runners to second and third, Iszak Mestas drove in the game's first run on an RBI groundout.
  • The RU offense then blew the game wide open with a five-run fifth inning. Iszak Mestas and Zach Hunter both singled, and then Tyler Peake reached via a fielder's choice to load the bases with only one out. Hunter Fiorito then drove in the first run of the inning with an infield single, to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Christian Garcia cleared the bases with a grand slam, to put his team in front 6-0.
  • The Stars would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a Garrett Wano leadoff home run.
  • However, Rockford would essentially put the game away with four more runs in the sixth. Troy Tucci got things started with a leadoff triple, and then scored on a Peyton McCray sacrifice fly. The Regents then loaded the bases on a walk, a hit by pitch and a Tyler Peake single. Following a Dominican pitching change, Jared Herzog drove in a pair of runs with a single to right. Rockford added one additional run on the play thanks to a Dominican error, to take a 10-1 lead.
  • Rockford would tack on one final run in the top of the seventh. Phil Hyland led off the inning with a triple. Three batters later, Iszak Mestas drove in Hyland with an RBI single.
  • Herzog would strike out two of the three batters in the bottom of the seventh, to secure the 11-1 win and the first complete game of his collegiate career.

Game 2

  • Rockford struck first for a single run in the top of the first inning.
  • Hunter Fiorito and Jared Herzog led off the game with back-to-back singles, to put runners on first and second with no one out. After Fiorito and Herzog each stole a base, Phil Hyland drove in the game's first run on an RBI groundout to short.
  • The Stars would tie the game in the bottom of the first off three hits, including an RBI single from Matt Galdi.
  • After Rockford went down in order in the second, Dominican took its first lead of the day in the bottom half of the frame. The Stars once again had three hits in the inning, but this time managed to scratch across a pair of runs and take a 3-1 lead.
  • The score remained unchanged until the Regents retook the lead with a three-run fourth. Troy Tucci got things started with a one-out double, and then advanced to third via a wild pitch. One batter later, Peyton McCray singled right, scoring Tucci, and making it a 3-2 game. After a couple of walks and stolen bases, Hunter Fiorito came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to right, to give Rockford a 4-3 lead.
  • Rockford would extend its lead to 5-3 in the fifth. Christian Garcia led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, Phil Hyland doubled to score Garcia, and give the Regents a two-run advantage.
  • That run proved to be critical, as the Stars scored a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Dominican strung together a walk and a pair of singles to score its run and pull back within one, at 5-4.
  • Fortunately, Rockford promptly put the game out of reach with a trio of runs in the top of the seventh. After a walk and an error put runners on first and second to start the inning, Troy Tucci ripped an RBI double to left, to make it a 6-4 Regent lead. One batter later, Peyton McCray crushed a two-run double, to give his team an 8-4 advantage.
  • Rockford added one more run in the eighth off doubles from Jared Herzog and Troy Tucci, to make it 9-4.
  • That was more than enough run support for Rockford starting pitcher Christian Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom completely shut down the Stars over the final two innings, retiring the last seven batters he faced, to seal the 9-4 win and the sweep.

Game 1

  • Jared Herzog tossed the first complete game of his collegiate career. Herzog went all 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 8. The win moves Herzog to 2-1 this season.
  • Iszak Mestas went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
  • Christian Garcia was 1-for-4 with a home run and 4 runs driven in.
  • Jared Herzog finished 1-for-4 with 2 runs driven in.
  • Hunter Fiorito was 1-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
  • Troy Tucci went 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 runs scored.

Game 2

  • Hunter Fiorito went 4-for-6 with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and a run scored.
  • Troy Tucci was 3-for-4 with 3 doubles, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
  • Peyton McCray was 2-for-3 with a double, 3 RBIs and a run scored.
  • Jared Herzog finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
  • Phil Hyland drove in 2 runs and scored another.
  • Christian Dahlstrom went the distance to improve to 4-2 this season. He allowed 4 runs and struck out 5 over his 9 innings of work.
  • Rockford tied the school record with 8 doubles in a single game.

The RU baseball team will close out the regular season next weekend with four games against Concordia University Chicago. Rockford will travel to CUC on Saturday for a noon doubleheader. The Regents will then host the Cougars on Sunday for a noon doubleheader at Rivets Stadium.
