ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Regents women's volleyball team (2-5), 0-1 NACC) lost all 3 sets of their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opening match on a Wednesday night game against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks (3-4, 1-0 NACC). It was a first set to forget, getting out to a lead but immediately surrendering point after point to drop the first set 25-11. A second set, far more intense, saw plenty of runs and lead changes that led to an unfortanate second set loss. And a Regents lead late in the third set was lost on one more Illinois Tech run to take the third set, completing the 3-0 sweep.
First Set
- The Regents would start with a 6-3 lead, 2 service aces by Brynn Atwell helping the cause.
- But then the Scarlet Hawks would soar, putting up 22 of the next 27 points, dominating the Regents. The only bright part of this run was a service ace from Melody Moreno and a kill from Alyssa Ashford towards the end of the set.
Second Set
- A much more heated set battle, an 8-5 Regents lead was erased by a 9-2 Scarlet Hawks run to take the lead 14-10.
- A Regents response with kills by Della Crain and Emily Lask, as well as a service ace by Melody Moreno, got the Regents back on top 20-17.
- Looking to even the sets, the Scarlet Hawks would swoop in for 8 of the next 10 points, stealing the set from the Regents paws, putting Rockford down in the set count, 2-0.
Third Set
- The third set saw the Scarlet Hawks staying just barely ahead of the Regents, by one to two points the whole way up until 14-12.
- The Regents would make their move on the next few points, tying and eventually taking the lead, on a service ace by Brynn Atwell. They would hold a lead at 19-16.
- The Regents would hold the advantage for a short time until it got to crunch time, where Illinois Tech would only let the Regents get one more point, getting themselves 9 out of 10 points to end the match, slamming the door, 25-20.
The RU women's volleyball team will head to Ripon Friday and Saturday for 4 games at the Red Hawks Invitational. They will play at 3pm and 5pm Friday, and 10am and 12pm Saturday.
