ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University football team (1-0) beat Grinnell College (0-1) in convincing fashion in a very strong week one performance. There would be a record broken and a few other statistics just missing the top spot on the all-time records list once all was said and done. Starting right away in the first quarter, the Regents put up two touchdowns, and finished the half with 3, shutting out Grinnell. They would go on to score 4 more touchdowns in the second half, giving up 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter when the game was easily in hand. The Regents would leave the field victorious, 48-13.

  • The opening drive saw Grinnell gain 35 yards before throwing an interception to Martiez Bowens who would return it 15 yards and set up the first Regents drive of the day.
  • The Regents would charge down the field and score in 4 plays, including a pass from Jaelen Ray to Joey Owens for 50 yards, capped off with a pass to Emani Johnson for 8 yards and a touchdown, 7-0 Regents.
  • A bad snap would cost Grinnell a drive and force a punt, which would take a bounce for 47 yards.
  • Jaelen Ray would complete a few more passes and rushes from LaVar Johnson Jr. would set up the Regents nicely for a 2 yard touchdown run by Kyle Thompson, 14-0 Rockford.
  • Grinnell would grind their way to opposing territory to finish out the first quarter.
  • The second quarter would start with a 3 and out and a failed 4th down conversion to give Rockford back the ball.
  • The Regents would make their way down the field, but a personal foul would put the next first down out of reach and they would fail to convert on 4th down.
  • Grinnell College would respond with a 44 yard drive and fail to convert on 4th down for the second time.
  • The Regents would find the end zone one more time before time expired on the half, Jaelen Ray would throw a pass to Joey Owens for the score, 21-0 Regents.
  • The second half would get underway with a very strong 46 yard drive in just over a minute that would end with another Jaelen Ray touchdown, this time to Jamon Carter-Grady for the touchdown, 27-0 Regents on a failed 2 point conversion.
  • Grinnell would work their way forward the next drive for 33 yards on 12 plays, failing on a third 4th down conversion.
  • A 28 yard pass to Emani Johnson would be a big play on the next drive, finishing off with an easy 1 yard LaVar Johnson Jr. touchdown run to put the score at 34-0.
  • The third quarter would see a Grinnell 3 and out and a 40 yard punt that would give the Regents the ball back.
  • The Regents would get the drive started but be cut short by the end of the 3rd quarter.
  • Continuing the drive, Jaelen Ray would throw his 4th touchdown pass of the day, complete to Joey Owens for the score, putting the Regents up 41-0.
  • Grinnell quarterback Gray Woodhouse would find Dustin Saia for a 50 yard touchdown pass on the next drive, finally getting them on the board. The score would be 41-6 due to the missed extra point.
  • Carl Jones would only get one touch for rushing on the day, but he would take it to the end zone on a 31 yard run to put the Regents up 48-6.
  • Daniel Carter for Grinnell would then take tha ball 32 yards on the next drive to secure a second and final touchdown of the game, leading to a final score of 48-13.

  • Jaelen Ray threw for 402 yards (2nd highest in school history), 4 touchdowns (tied for 2nd in school history), complete 31 passes (a school record), and completed 83.7% of his passes (2nd in school history).
  • LaVar Johnson Jr. was one of many rushers on the day, but he finished with the team high 54 yards rushing, and a touchdown.
  • Joey Owens would have 12 receptions on the day (2nd in school history), and finished with 185 yards (4th in school history), and 2 touchdowns (tied for 3rd in school history).
