ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University football team hosted the Benedictine University Eagles for senior day on Saturday. The undefeated Eagles, who received votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll this week, marched their way to a 56-20 victory.
Freshman quarterback
Jahari Greer made his first start behind center. He finished 22-for-40 for 196 yards through the air, while also tossing two touchdowns and two picks.
Greer also led the team in rushing with 41 yards.
Napoleon Williams followed closely behind, galloping for 37 yards on eight carries.
Williams was the engine all day for the Regent offense. He was one catch shy of matching his own single-game program record, reeling in 14 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.
Kenny Moten-Barden once again showed his big play ability, tallying 78 receiving yards and a touchdown on four receptions.
The defense was unable to replicate the Wisconsin Lutheran performance.
Jeremyah Johnson and
Joey Alvarez each brought down a team-leading four BenU ball carriers. Reigning NACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Matthew Hill led RU with two tackles-for-loss.
Benedictine received the football to start the game. Rockford's defense forced a three-and-out right off the bat to give the offense a chance to start with the lead.
Unfortunately, a high snap over the head of Greer gave the ball right back to the Eagles. BenUÂ scored on the very next play and swung all the momentum back to its sideline.
After going up 7-0, the Eagles scored on their next three offensive possessions to take a 28-point lead. The Regent offense struggled mightily before a 12-play, 64-yard drive at the end of the first period resulted in a field goal.
Both teams traded punts to start the second quarter. Davion Terry broke away for a 61-yard touchdown (his third of the game and second of 60+ yards) halfway through to give BenU a 35-3 lead.
Kavi Wadhwa knocked a second field goal through the uprights and the Eagles put together a successful two-minute drill to give us a 42-6 halftime score.
RU found some success offensively in the second half, capping off an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a Greer to Moten-Barden 23-yard connection on fourth down to start the half.
Williams reeled in a 4-yard arrow in the fourth to give RU its second touchdown of the day. Benedictine coasted to 14 more second half points (with Terry finding the end zone for the fourth time) to secure a 36-point win.
The Regents will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, when they head to Eureka College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
