ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University women's volleyball team defeated a familiar foe, the Alverno College Inferno, 3-1 on Tuesday night to extend the winning streak over the Inferno to seven.
Three Regents tallied over double-digit kills.
Jalyn Rhodes torpedoed 12,
Lilly Dewey smacked 11, and
Emmerson Heun hammered down 10.
Both
Isabella Valdes and
Milee Law eclipsed 20 kills, Valdes with 24 and Law with 20 on the dot.
Leila Cooks was all over the place in the purple jersey, finishing with 20 digs.
Alverno stunned the Regents to start the match. Down 16-13, the Inferno fired off a 7-1 run to jump into the driver's seat and closed it out, 25-22.
Rockford bounced back, going up 5-4 and never relinquishing the lead after that. Both teams had their runs, but it was a 4-0 run late for the Regents that helped them seal the 25-20 victory and even up the match.
The third set was back-and-forth. Alverno's 4-0 run midway through put the Inferno up 13-11. RU rallied back, tying the set at 21. From there it was kills from Heun, Rhodes, and
Kennedy Bryant that helped earn four straight points that won the set, 25-21.
It looked like the Regents were going to waltz to a four-set victory after a 7-0 run made it 11-4 in the fourth frame. But the Inferno wouldn't go down without a fight, reeling off eight of the next nine to tie things up at 12. Rockford would widen the gap late, with help from kills by Rhodes and
Jasiah Johnson, both assisted by Law. Heun hammered the nail into the coffin, finishing off the Inferno with a 25-20 win.
The Regents will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 8, when Dominican comes to town for a home NACC match at 7 p.m.
