ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford College men's basketball team fell to the Coe Kohawks 65-61 in its home opener at the Seaver Center Tuesday night. The Regents jumped out to a quick 22-9 lead midway through the 1st half behind the hot hand of junior guard Scott Suchy (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston). Suchy scored 10 of the first 22 points for the Regents pacing them to their largest lead of the game. Coe would rally and go on a 24-11 run to enter halftime tied at 33.
Junior forward Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) would lead the Regents in the 2nd half scoring 4 of the teams first 5 points. It wouldn't be enough as Coe started the half with a 15-5 run to take a 48-38 lead with 12:27 remaining in the game. Suchy got the Regents back into the game scoring 6 straight points to bring the score to within 4 after a pair of free throws. Rockford continued to battle and cut the Kohawk lead to 2 with seven seconds remaining in the game. Coe's David Mataloni hit a pair of pressure packed free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the 4 point win for the Kohawks.
The Regents were able to win the turnover battle 12-8, but their bench would be outscored 10-0 which proved to be the difference. Senior forward Sam Chones (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) scored 7 points to go with 6 rebounds. Scott Suchy finished with a game-high 26 points with 4 steals. Minnifield ended the night with 22 points and 5 rebounds.
The Regents next game is on the road on Friday, November 23rd at Eureka College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
