ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford College men's basketball team held on to beat Benedictine University 77-75 at the Seaver Center Saturday night. Benedictine jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead before the Regents would go on a 17-4 run to take a 19-12 lead with 9:43 remaining in the half. The Regents shot 48% from the field and forced 10 Eagles turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Junior forward Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) paced the Regents with 13 points as they entered halftime with a 34-28 lead.
The Regents saw their lead disappear less then two minutes into the 2nd half as Benedictine scored six straight points to start the half. Junior guard Scott Suchy (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) scored the next six points for the Regents to bring them back in the game. Rockford then got a huge lift from its bench in the 2nd half. Junior guard Arthur Miller IV (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) and junior forward Phil Andrade (South Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Trail) saw substancial minutes in the 2nd half due to injuries and foul trouble. Miller scored all 8 of his points in the second half while Andrade played all but 13 seconds of the half. With the Regents down 69-71 and 2:25 remaining, Miller nailed a 3 pointer to give the Regents the lead for good. The game came down to the last possession, but the Eagles missed a open 3 point attempt from the corner as time expired.
Minnifield led the way for the Regents scoring a game-high 28 points with 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Scott Suchy added 22 points for the Regents and is currently 3rd in the NAC averging 19.7 points per game. Senior forward Grant Olsen (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds before fouling out early in the 2nd half. Rockford is currently 3-0 in the NAC and only trail 4-0 Aurora.
The next game for Regents will be Friday, December 14th as they host Principia College. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
