Cape Coral, Fla. - The Rockford Regents softball program started their season on a high note with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon improving to 2-0 on the season. The Regents took game 1 with a 7-5 victory over Medaille College and took game 2 with a 5-3 victory over Albright College.
The Regents bats were hot out the gate as Rockford jumped out to a 4-0 in the top of the first inning in part to a triple by senior 1st baseman Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./pearl City). Freshman Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) followed Lawler with a single up the middle to give the Regents a quick 3-0 lead.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the 2nd, Rockford answered with three more runs in the top of the third inning. Senior shortstop Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) came through with a ground rule double with two outs to score two more Regent runs and give Rockford a 7-1 lead.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco) scattered 11 Medaille hits through 6.2 innings while giving up five runs with one strikeout. Bura came on for one pitch to record the save for Rockford giving them their first victory of the year.
Game 2 started out the exact opposite as the Regents found themselves down 3-0 through four innings. Rockford answered with a 2-out, 2-run double by senior catcher Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem). Lawler and Bura both followed that up with singles to make the score 4-3 after the fifth inning.
The Regents were able to tack on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Nicole Lawler and Brittany Bura hit back to back doubles to make the score 5-3. Sophmore pitcher Sarah Moritz (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) went the distance giving up 8 hits over 7 innings while striking out 2.
The pair of wins made head coach Kristyn King the schools all-time wins leader among all sports with 329 wins. Rockford will square off against Franklin & Marshall College and Ohio Wesleyan College tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 9 AM & 11 AM
