BELOIT, Wis. - The Rockford University volleyball team split its two opening games at the Buccaneer Blast Volleyball Tournament on Friday night. Rockford fell in its opener 3-0 to Beloit College, but the Regents bounced back nicely in the night cap defeating Finlandia University 3-0 to even their record at 1-1.
It is turned out to be a difficult opening match of the 2013 season for the Regents against the Buccaneers of Beloit College (1-0). Although Rockford fell in straight sets, (25-15, 25-17, 25-19) the Regents saw solid play on multiple areas of the court. Offensively it was junior transfer Katelyn Hasken (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) who led the charge. Hasken finished with a team-high 10 kills on 24 attack attempts. Defensively it was Heather Hyland (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) who played an excellent match at the net. Hyland finished with 6 blocks including 4 solo blocks. Finally it was Laina Scheri (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) who provided a spark with her match-high 3 service aces for Rockford.
After the rough opening match, Rockford came right back to win its second match of the day. The Regents knocked off Finlandia University in straight sets (0-1). The Regents were in complete control the entire match winning 3-0 in convincing fashion (25-11, 25-17, 25-11). A complete box score should be available sometime Saturday.
The volleyball team wraps up their play at the Buccaneer Blast Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The Regents open play on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the University of Dubuque and conclude their day at noon against Marian University.
