ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - Saturday once again turned out to be a difficult day for the Rockford University men's soccer team. Rockford had hoped to secure its first win of the season as they traveled to face the Crown College Storm. However, despite playing their best match so far this season, the Regents were unable to contain the Storm offense losing the match 7-4.
Despite their stuggles on defense, offensively the Regents made great strides on Saturday having by far its best showing of the season. Senior Sam Medina-Conchi (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan) found the back of the net just over five minutes into the match to give Rockford its first lead of the season. That lead was short lived as the Storm scored two goals over the next 16 minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Juan Carlos Virgen (Chicago, Ill./Jeffreson) then sent the game into the half tied at two all with his first goal of the season.
After a very competive first half the Regents dug themselves into a deep hole early in the second half. Crown scored 3 goals in just over a 2 minute span to take a 5-2 advantage. The Storm would find the back of the net two more times to go up 7-2. However, the Regents continued to battle late in the game cutting into the lead. Virgen scored two goals in just over a 2 minute span of his own midway through the half cutting the lead to 7-4. Unfortunately that turned out to be as close as Rockford got losing the match 7-4 and falling to 0-4 on the season.
The men's soccer team returns to action next Saturday, September 14th at Cornell College. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
