MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Rockford University women's basketball team dropped its season opener 81-40 at Cornell College on Saturday. It was a difficult evening for the Regents as Cornell came out of the gates on fire and never let up. The Rams opened the evening on a 9-0 run and did not look back. Cornell shot 60% from the floor and 50% from the three-point line to take a 49-22 lead into halftime. Unfortunately the second half mirrored the first half, as the Regents were unable to chip away at the lead and eventually fell on the road. Despite the loss, Rockford did do a good job rebounding the basketball, especially on the offensive end of the floor. The Regents were able to grab an impressive 17 offensive rebounds but were only able to convert those scoring opportunities into 10 second chance points.
Junior transfer Amanda Davis (Mundelein, Ill.) played well in her opening game in a Regents' uniform. Davis scored a team-high 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting along with grabbing 2 rebounds and dishing out an assist.
Fellow junior Diamond Williams (Carpentersville, Ill.) and sophomore Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) also had noteworthy performances for Rockford. Williams scored 6 points on 3-of-9 shooting and tallied a team-high 9 rebounds. Getzelman had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal.
The women's basketball team returns to the court tomorrow, Sunday, November 16 against Mt. Mercy. The game will be played at Cornell College and will have a tip-off time of 4:00 p.m.
