LISLE, Ill. - The Rockford University volleyball team entered Friday's match on a bit of a roll having won its previous two matches dating back to last Saturday. However, the Regents knew it would be a tall task to knock off Benedictine as the Eagles have finished fourth or higher in the NACC standings every year except once since the formation of the conference in 2006. The Regents were able to play well in spurts; however, it was the Eagles who came out on top in straight sets.
Rockford got off to a slow start in the each of the first two sets as the Eagles jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead in the first set and a 14-3 lead in the second. Despite digging themselves into a hole, the Regents continued to battle and were able to get back within 3 points on multiple occasions in opening set. However, it was the Eagles who scored two of the set's final three points for the 25-21 win. In the second set the deficit was too much for Rockford to overcome as the Eagles soared to a 25-7 win.
The Regents began the third set clicking on all cylinders and took their first lead of the evening. The ladies scored the set's first three points and continued to hold the lead at 6-4. Unfortunately, the Eagles answered by scoring ten of the next eleven points including seven straight to take a 14-7 advantage. Rockford was never able to significantly cut into the lead and ultimately lost the set and the match.
Offensively the Regents were led by the trio of Taylor Rossi (Ingleside, Ill.), Katie Fowler (Stillman Valley, Ill.) and Marissa Plock (German Valley, Ill.). Rossi recorded her team-leading ninth double-double of the season with 18 assists and 14 digs. Fowler tallied a team-high seven kills marking the third straight match she has led the Regents in kills. Plock also had a nice evening with six kills.
The RU volleyball team returns to the court on Tuesday, October 6 against Beloit College. The match has a scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m. in the Seaver Center.
