MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The RU women's soccer team won its second consecutive match on Saturday afternoon with an impressive 2-1 road win over the Alverno College Inferno. The win came with a little extra added meaning as it was the Regents first win against a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponent since October, 2008.
The match was scoreless for nearly the entire first half until Rockford broke through in the 40th minute. Sophomore Giovana Ortega (Rockford, Ill.) once again came through in the clutch for Rockford as she scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season giving the Regents a 1-0 halftime lead.
It remained 1-0 until the Regents found the back of the net for the second time on Saturday off a free kick in the 63rd minute of the match. This time the Rockford goal came off the foot of freshman Mackenzi Hesselbart (Elkhart, Ind.). It was her fourth goal of the season and her third goal in the last two matches.
The Inferno were able to make it close with a goal in the 81st minute to pull back within one. However, it was not enough as Rockford ultimately came out on top with the 2-1 victory.
Rockford goalkeeper Gris Mendoza (Rockford, Ill.) picked up her fourth win of the season on Saturday. Mendoza tallied 3 saves to bring her season total to an impressive 95 saves.
The Regents will conclude their 2015 season on Tuesday, October 27 at Faith Baptist Bible College. The match has a scheduled start time of 3:30 p.m.
