ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action Thursday to take on Maranatha Baptist University at the Seaver Center. Rockford fell behind early but used its defense as a catalyst to its comeback victory by the final of 54-47. Rockford held Maranatha to only 32.8% shooting from the field and forced 23 Sabercat turnovers.
In the first quarter the Regents allowed seven straight points to the Sabercats before fighting back to retake the lead by a score of 10-9 at the end of the period. Rockford pushed the lead to nine points in the second quarter; however, the Sabercats were able to slowly chip away as the Regents led just 25-23 at halftime. The third quarter was tight nearly the entire way as neither team was able to pull away until late. Rockford closed the period on a 9-2 run as Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) scored six straight points as the Regents took a 41-31 lead into the fourth quarter. The Regents continued to build on their lead and eventually pushed it to a game-high 14 points with 8:13 remaining. The Sabercats never really threatened down the stretch as the Regents cruised to a 54-47 win.
The Regents were led by an impressive performance from Mallorie Getzelman. Getzelman scored a game-high 19 points with 5 rebounds and 1 assist. She has now scored in double-figures in six of the team's eight games including scoring 40 points in her past two games. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) tallied 11 points and tied for the team-high with 2 steals. Cherith Roweton (Weaubleau, Mo.) also played well adding 6 points and a team-high 7 rebounds in only 15 minutes. Amanda Davis (Mundelein, Ill.) was the other Regent in double-figures with 11 points.
The Rockford University women's basketball team will return to action Saturday, December 19 to take on Aurora University in Aurora, Ill. with a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
