AURORA, Ill. - The Regents women's basketball team fell 69-49 to the Aurora University Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The Regents again dug themselves a deep hole early in the first quarter that they were unable to climb out of. Rockford shot just 28.6% from the floor including going 0-of-12 from beyond the arc and was simply never able to string together enough made baskets to catch up.
The Regents scored the first points of the game on a pair of Casey Pettit (Rockford, Ill.) free throws before the Spartans began to take control. Aurora then scored the next 14 points as the Spartans held the Regents without a basket until the 4:38 mark in the first quarter. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) would momentarily get the deficit under 10 points as she connected on a three-point play to make it a 14-5 game. Unfortunately that would be the final time the Regents were within 10 points for the remainder of the game. The Spartans scored the next nine points to take a 23-5 advantage and continued to extend their lead as they held a 37-18 advantage entering halftime.
The second half went much better for Rockford as the Regents were able to stay even with the Spartans. Rockford opened the second half on 10-3 run to get within 12 points less than midway through the third quarter. Talayah Gordon Scott (Rockford, Ill.) and Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) led the charge scoring 4 points each. However, the Spartans promptly went on an 11-4 run of their own to take a 51-32 advantage. Aurora would extend its lead to as many as 25 points en route to a 69-49 win.
Rockford had a trio of players score in double-digits on Saturday. Senior Amanda Davis (Mundelein, Ill.) led the Regents in scoring with 12 points off the bench. She added 4 rebounds and 1 steal to round out her afternoon. Guard Mallorie Getzelman finished the game just one rebound shy of her first collegiate double-double. Getzelman tallied 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Sophomore Tajanae Key was the final Regent to hit double-figures. Key added 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.
The RU women's basketball team returns to the court on Wednesday, December 30 at home against Knox College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Seaver Center.
