RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford University volleyball team played its second road match in as many nights on Wednesday when the Regents squared off against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. Despite what the final result might indicate, the match was close for much of the evening.
In the opening set Rockford got off to a very slow start falling behind 6-1 before the Regents came roaring back. The ladies went on an 8-3 run of their own to knot the match up at 9-9. However, the Cougars answered with a 9-0 spurt to take a commanding 18-9 lead en route to winning the opening set 25-13.
The second set followed a near identical pattern as the Regents were again forced to play from behind. After trailing 6-2 in the opening moments the ladies began to click on all cylinder scoring 9 of the next 13 points to grab an 11-10 lead. Once again though the Cougars hit right back with a 9-1 run to jump back in front 19-12 and go on to win the second set 25-16.
The Regents continued to improve as the match went along playing their best volleyball of the evening in the third set. Rockford led on several different occasions as the Regents and Cougars went back-and-forth with the lead. The ladies held a 16-15 lead late in the set with an opportunity to get themselves back into the match. Unfortunately, it was once again the Cougars who closed the set well scoring 10 of the final 13 points in route to the 25-19 win.
Junior Taylor Rossi (Ingleside, Ill.) and Marissa Plock (German Valley, Ill.) were the top performers for Rockford on Wednesday evening. Rossi and Plock each recorded a team-high four kills while Rossi also added seven assists and three digs.
The Rockford University volleyball team returns to the court on Saturday, September 26 at home against Mount Mary University. The match has a scheduled start time of 1:00 p.m. in the Seaver Center.
