BELOIT, Wis. - The Rockford University women's soccer team hit the road on Saturday for the first time this season when they took on the Beloit College Buccaneers. The Regents and Buccaneers played a very competitive first half before Beloit eventually took control of the match and won by a 7-1 final.
Rockford got off to an excellent start as the Regents scored less than 2 minutes into the match. Sophomore Giovana Ortega (Rockford, Ill.) found the back of the net off a crisp pass from Fernanda Chavez (Belvidere, Ill.) giving Rockford an early 1-0 lead. The Regents would hold the lead until the eighth minute when Beloit scored its first goal of the day to tie the match at 1-1. The Buccaneers would go onto score two more goals over the next four minutes and grab a 3-1 lead entering halftime. Unfortunately Rockford was unable to narrow the gap in the second half as Beloit scored four more goals and won 7-1.
Offensively it was Giovana Ortega who led the Rockford charge. Ortega recorded 3 of the team's 7 shots including 2 of the 6 shots on goal and Rockford only goal of the match.
The women's soccer team returns to the field on Sunday, September 6 at home against Coe College. The match will be played at Sam Greeley Field beginning at 1 p.m.
