FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Rockford University baseball team continued began the second day of their spring trip looking to carry their offensive performance over from the prior game. Unfortunately the Regents were unable to find the offensive spark needed to prevail over the Cardinals of Otterbein University. Rockford fell by the final of 4-2.
Starting the game on the mound for the Regents was Adam O'Malley (Elk Grove, Ill.) providing a solid start lasting 6 innings, allowing 4 runs and recording 8 strikeouts. Joseph Valdez (Tucson, Ariz.) came into the game for the second straight day and retired 6-out of-7 batters he faced and added 2 strikeouts for an impressive performance. Valdez competed in his first collegiate game on Saturday against Eastern Nazarene College.
Offensively, the Regents were quiet throughout much of the game until the eighth inning when Kraemer Brandt (Elk Grove, Ill.) reached base with a walk. After a strikeout Kwynn Rury (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) delivered with a double to right field and advanced Brandt to third on the hit. Robert Smith (Bartlett, Ill.) followed Rury up with a hard-hit ball the shortstop was unable to handle which allowed both runners to score and bring Rockford within two runs of Otterbein. However, the Regents were unable to plate any runs in the ninth falling by the final of 4-2. Rockford could only muster 4 hits in the game.
Playing well for the Regents was Andrew Hunt (Apple Valley, Calif.) collecting 2 hits leading the team as the only player with a multi-hit game.
The Rockford University baseball team returns to action Monday, March 7 to take on Carroll University in Fort Myers, Fla. with a scheduled start time of 12 p.m. EST.
