Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lexie Collins and Giovana Ortega Lead Rockford To Win In Season Opener

ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's soccer team opened up their season against Iowa Wesleyan University. The Regents came out on fire jumping to a 3-0 lead just over nine minutes into the opening half. Rockford tacked on seven more goals to secure the victory 10-0. In the past decade, this is the first time the Regents have scored 10 or more goals in a game. It was also the first time since 2011, in which Rockford won their season opening game.

The Regents came out from the opening whistle ready to play. With their first scoring opportunity coming off of a Giovana Ortega (Rockford, Ill.) takeaway from the defense to put it in the back of the net from three yards out. Ortega was not done as she added her second goal less than a minute later off of a beautiful cross pass from Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.). Rockford added their third goal of the game when Samantha Moreno (East Moline, Ill.) scored her first collegiate goal off another outstanding pass from Collins. The next four goals added by the Regents were accounted for by Ortega and Collins. Ortega had one of those goals, and Collins added three along with an assist. Rockford tacked on another goal before Rebecca Krueger (Kiel, Wis.) added her first goal of the season, and second of her career, to increase the lead to 9-0. Finally, the Regents added their final goal of the day when Melissa Macias (Posen, Ill.) booted one into the back of the net from 20 yards out to record her first goal of the season. Rockford allowed only one shot from Iowa Wesleyan, which is a testament to how well they performed as a team. They were on the offensive all match totaling 22 shots, 11 on goal, and 10 goals.

Gris Mendoza (Rockford, Ill.) recorded the fifth shutout of her career. Mendoza notched her sixth victory in a Regent uniform at goalie. She notched one save on one shot for the match.

Playing well for the Regents was Collins. She was incredible in her first game in a Regent uniform. Collins tallied 3 goals and 3 assists on 5 shots. Ortega was outstanding as well for Rockford. Ortega recorded 3 goals on 4 shots. She has now recorded 15 goals in the past two seasons. It is her second three goal game as a Regent. Macias, Krueger, and Moreno each added their own goals.

The Rockford University women's soccer team returns to action Sunday September 4 at Lakeland College with a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
