Valiant Comeback Effort Falls Short For Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action today to take on Concordia University Wisconsin in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. Both teams were locked in a tight battle for the final two periods before the Falcons were able to pull away at the end to win by the final of 70-67.

After Rockford scored the first two points of the game off of a layup by Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.), Concordia went on an 8-0 run to take the lead 8-2 with 6:38 remaining in the opening quarter. The Regents and Falcons traded baskets for the rest of the quarter. Rockford trailed 17-10 heading into the second period. To begin the second period, the Falcons jumped out to their largest lead in the game, 29-14, with 6:45 remaining. Rockford went on a 6-0 run to narrow their deficit to 29-20. Getzelman had four of the team's six points during the run. Unfortunately, Concordia was able to expand their lead to 34-21 at halftime. Mallorie Getzelman and Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) led the team with 6 points through two periods.

The Concordia lead hovered around 14 points for the majority of the third period, until Rockford was able to put together an 8-4 run to end the third period. The Regents trailed 53-43 after three. May and Getzelman each had 4 points to lead the scoring run. In the final period, Rockford erased their entire deficit made an excellent comeback. The Regents began with a 14-2 run, over the first five minutes of the quarter, to take the lead 57-55. Ultimately, Rockford was unable to hold on to the lead as they fell by the final of 70-67. For the game, the Regents shot 37.3% and the Falcons shot 48.1% from the floor. 

Leading Rockford on the day were Taylor May scoring 24 points with 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Mallorie Getzelman added 18 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) posted a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. 

The Rockford University women's basketball team returns to action Tuesday, January 24 against Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Ill. with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
