ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action today to take on Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were looking to get back on track and notch their third NACC victory of the season. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so as Concordia ran away from Rockford in the final two periods. The Regents fell by the final of 100-84.
Throughout the first two periods, the teams were locked in a tight battle. In the first quarter Concordia jumped out to an early lead and never surrendered it. Rockford was down by as many as six points in the quarter, but trailed 23-18 heading into the second quarter. The Cougars expanded their lead to nine points, 32-23, with 7:28 remaining in the quarter. Rockford then went on an 18-11 run to close the period. They trailed 43-41 at the half. Leading the Regents in the first half was Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) scoring 16 points on 7-of-16 from the field.
In the final two periods Concordia used two strong runs to separate themselves from Rockford. To begin the third quarter the Cougars used a 6-0 run to quickly increase their lead to eight, 49-41. Both teams traded baskets for the next five minutes, before Concordia went on a 9-0 run to expand their lead to 17 points, 69-52 and pull away from Rockford for good. The Regents were able to narrow the margin to single digits, nine points, a couple of times in the fourth quarter but were unable to claw any closer. Rockford shot very well from the field at 49.3%.
Leading the Regents were Mallorie Getzelman with a team-high 23 points. She also grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) posted 22 points, on 10-of-16 shooting, with 2 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks. Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.) had a great all-around game tallying 15 points, on 6-of-10 shooting, 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) added 13 points with 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Rockford University women's basketball team will return to action Saturday, January 7 to take on Edgewood College in Madison, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 2 p.m.
