Sabres Slip Past Regents in Overtime

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Rockford University women's basketball team (1-6, 0-4 NACC) concluded its five-game road trip on Tuesday night, with a 71-65 overtime loss to Marian University (2-4, 2-1 NACC). Statistically, the game was a dead heat in nearly every major category. Marian held a slight advantage in made field goals (25-24) but Rockford had a slim advantage in made free throws (12-10) and rebounding (43-41). However, the deciding factor in the game came at the three-point line. The Sabres connected on 11 three-point attempts, compared to just five made triples for the Regents.

  • Rockford got off to a fast start and never trailed in the first quarter.
  • The Regents opened the game on a 6-0 run, before taking a 10-4 lead into the second period. Five different Regents scored in the opening ten minutes, led by three points from Katlyn Fiorucci
  • Unfortunately, the second quarter belonged to the Sabres. Marian used a 14-6 run midway through the period, to take its first lead of the game at 20-18.
  • Rockford would tie the game at 23-23, before Marian ultimately took a 27-23 advantage into the break.
  • The Sabres continued to build upon their momentum early in the third, with a 5-0 run to take the largest lead of the day for either team at 32-23.
  • Fortunately, Rockford responded with a 6-0 run of their own, to pull back within three. Linzy Keller led the offensive attack with four points during that span.
  • Marian would build its lead back up to nine, before the Regents closed the quarter scoring nine of the final twelve points. Four different Regents scored over the final 3:18, as Rockford trailed by just three points heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Sabre lead hovered around three points for the majority of the quarter, until Rockford made one final push in the closing moments.
  • With Rockford still trailing by five and just 71 seconds remaining, Neve Yerk connected on a jumper and made it a one-possession game.
  • Following a defensive stop by the Regents, Rockford got the ball back with just 32 seconds remaining and still trailing by three. As the seconds ticked away, Katlyn Fiorucci found Emily Cox who stepped up to the three-point line and calmly drained the game-tying triple with 7 seconds remaining.
  • The RU defense held firm on Marian's final possession in regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
  • The overtime period got off to a great start, as Rockford scored the first five points. Emily Cox connected on an old-fashioned three-point play, followed by a pair of made free throws from Linzy Keller, to give Rockford a 63-58 lead.
  • Unfortunately, Marian answered right back with a 9-0 run, to jump out in front 67-63 with 2:01 remaining.
  • Following a Rockford timeout, Emily Cox connected on a layup, to make it just a two-point Sabre lead at the 1:40 mark.
  • However, the Sabres would put the game away with three-pointer on their next possession en route to a 71-65 win.

  • Linzy Keller finished with a game and season-high 22 points and 2 rebounds.
  • Emily Cox added an RU career-high 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.
  • Jazsmin Blue chipped in a game and RU career-high 11 rebounds, 6 points and 2 steals off the bench.
  • Neve Yerk had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

The RU women's basketball team returns home on Saturday, December 7 to face Aurora University. Tip-off is set for 4:15 PM in the Seaver Center.
