RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Regents (11-11, 9-8 NACC) put on a thrilling performance in their 100-95 come-from-behind win over Concordia University Chicago (7-15, 6-11 NACC) on Wednesday night. Rockford overcame a 14-point deficit with under six minutes left in the second half, and then a seven-point deficit with 1:22 remaining to force overtime. Rockford's Brandon Emerick hit his second game-tying bucket in the closing moments of a game since the beginning of the new year, this one coming at the buzzer. Emerick took the inbound, dribbled the ball up the floor, darted his way through the lane and laid it into the basket to tie the game at 84-84 with no time remaining. Rockford only trailed briefly in the overtime period, as the Regents went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line over the final 40 seconds, to win the game and earn a season sweep over the Cougars.
- Rockford played extremely well in the first half, as the Regents trailed for just 20 seconds in the entire period.
- The Regents scored the first five points of the game, capped off by a Brandon Emerick triple, to take an early lead.
- Concordia Chicago was able to tie the game on multiple occasions before taking its first lead of the evening at 15-13 with 13:30 remaining.
- The two schools then traded baskets over the next four minutes with neither team leading by more than three points.
- Late in the half, Rockford used a 10-2 run to take a 35-27 lead, its largest of the game. Jose Trinidad led the Regent attack with six points on a perfect 2-for-2 shooting from beyond the arc.
- With the Regents still leading by eight, CUC outscored Rockford 13-7 over the final 3:51 of the half to get back within two at the break.
- The first half was one of Rockford's best shooting performances in any half so far this season. The Regents shot 58.1% (18-of-31) from the floor including a blistering 66.7% (10-of-15) from three-point range.
- However, it was CUC who opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take its largest lead thus far at 55-50.
- Concordia Chicago continued to build upon its lead, as Rockford never lead the remainder of the second half.
- The Cougars would eventually extend their lead to a game-high 14 points with only 5:44 left in regulation.
- However, as has been the case all season long, there was absolutely no quit in the Regents. Rockford promptly scored nine straight points, to make it just a five-point game with 3:51 remaining. Nathaniel Shead led Rockford with four points, while Brandon Emerick added three and Jamar Rivera chipped in two.
- CUC was able to push its lead back to seven points with only 1:22 left in the second half.
- Kivontay Shaw came up with a pair of clutch threes on back-to-back possessions, to pull the Regents within two with 42 seconds remaining.
- Concordia Chicago seemed to put the game out of reach after connecting a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to make it an 83-79 game.
- However, Rockford's Vincent Eugene had other ideas. Eugene calmly stood in the corner and knocked down his only three-point attempt of the night, to make it a one-point game with 4.5 seconds remaining.
- The Regents would then foul and put the Cougars at the line with 3.9 seconds left. CUC was only able to make 1-of-2 at the line, giving Rockford one final chance to tie or win the game in regulation.
- Brandon Emerick once again came through for Rockford in the final seconds. Emerick took the inbound pass, went the length of the floor and laid it in to tie the game and force overtime. Highlight Clip
- After CUC scored the first basket of the overtime period, Emerick drained his seventh three of the game, to give Rockford the lead for the first time since early in the second half.
- Kivontay Shaw then hit back-to-back baskets to give the Regents a 91-86 lead with 2:01 remaining.
- However, CUC would not go away quietly, as the Cougars scored seven of the next eight points to retake the lead with 48 seconds left.
- Nathaniel Shead responded with a deep two-pointer just under the top of the arc, to put Rockford back in front 94-93.
- Kivontay Shaw and Nathaniel Shead combined to go 6-for-6 at the free throw line over the final 40 seconds to seal the Regent win.
- Rockford shot 53.3% from beyond the arc, making 16 triples, which was just one shy of tying the school record.
- The Regents were also an incredible 18-of-19 at the free throw line.
- Rockford is now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the NACC with just three games remaining.
- Brandon Emerick finished with 23 points and went 7-for-11 on three-point attempts. He also added 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal.
- Kivontay Shaw poured in a team-high 25 points, going 7-for-11 from the floor, 4-of-4 from three-point range and 7-of-7 at the free throw line. Shaw also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
- Nathaniel Shead added 16 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 1 rebound off the bench.
- Jamar Rivera tallied 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
- Jose Trinidad scored 9 points, while going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He rounded out his night with 2 assists, 1 rebound and 1 steal.
The RU men's basketball team closes the regular season with its final three games at home. The Regents' next game is on Saturday, February 15 against Edgewood College. Tip-off is set for 2 PM in the Seaver Center.
