Regents Walk Off with a 5-4 Win on a Logan Streit RBI Single

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Regents moved to 3-0 on the season after a thrilling 5-4 comeback win Sunday afternoon against Central College (1-2). Rockford never led in today's game until after the final pitch. The Dutch scored two in the top of the first and two more in the top of the third, to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Regents then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth with two outs to tie the game at 4-4. After holding the Dutch scoreless in the top of the ninth, Logan Streit ripped the game-winning RBI single back up the middle to give the Regents a 5-4 victory.

  • Central struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. After retiring the first two batters of the game, Rockford surrendered a single and then a two-run home run, to give the Dutch a 2-0 lead.
  • Rockford was able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first. Hunter Fiorito walked to lead off the inning and then stole both second and third base. Two batters later, Michael Gunter drove in Fiorito with RBI single, making it 2-1 after one full inning of play.
  • The Regents had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the second, but left the bases loaded.
  • The Dutch would take advantage by extending their lead in the top of the third. After an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach base, Lucas Farren singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Central then took advantage of multiple wild pitches and an error to plate a pair of unearned runs and make it a 4-1 game.
  • Rockford had at least one runner in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but unfortunately, came up empty each time.
  • However, things would change in the bottom of the eighth, when the Regents came up with multiple clutch two-out hits. Logan Streit and Christian Garcia jump-started the offense with a one-out double and a walk, putting runners on first and second. Two batters later, Troy Tucci delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double to pull the Regents back within a single run. Following a pitching change, Hunter Fiorito stepped up to the plate and promptly drove in Tucci to tie the game.
  • The RU pitching staff again did its job in the top of the ninth, holding Central scoreless for the sixth consecutive inning.
  • The bottom half of the ninth got off to a great start, with Michael Gunter reaching on a walk and Corey Saracco reaching on a hit by pitch. Two batters later, Logan Streit stepped into the box and laced a walk-off, RBI single back up the middle, scoring Gunter and giving Rockford a trilling 5-4 win.
  • The RU comeback effort was made possible in part because of the excellent pitching by the Regents over the final six innings. RU starter Kent Evans Jr. allowed no runs and just one hit over his final three innings of work, while striking out three. Chris Hawks was brilliant out of the pen, allowing no runs and just two hits, while striking out three over his three innings on the mound.

  • Logan Streit was the hero of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and driving in the game-winning run.
  • Troy Tucci went 1-for-2 with a 2-run double and also scored a run in the eighth.
  • Hunter Fiorito was 2-for-4 with 2 stolen bases, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Michael Gunter finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Kent Evans Jr. made his Regent debut on the mound. He fired six strong innings, allowing 2 earned runs off 4 hits, while striking out 8.
  • Chris Hawks tossed 3 shutout innings out of the bullpen. Hawks allowed just 2 hits and struck out 3 to move to 1-0 this year.
  • Catcher Dalton Phillips threw out all 3 of Central's would be base stealers in game, two of which came at third base in crucial situations.

The RU baseball team plays its final game in Jacksonville, Illinois at 5 PM today against Robert Morris-Peoria.
