Women's Volleyball Goes Undefeated on Senior Day

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Regents women's volleyball team (4-18, 1-8 NACC) won both of its triangular matches on Saturday night. The 4:30 match was steadily in Rockford's hands as the Regents won both of their first two sets against Alverno College (1-12, 0-9 NACC). They slipped up in the third set but ran away with the match in the fourth set, winning 3-1. The second match, scheduled for 8:30, was more of the same. Rockford charged ahead into a two-set lead against Mount Mary University (6-17). They then dropped the third set, before rallying back to win the fourth, completing a perfect 2-0 record on senior night with another win 3-1.

Recap Recap

Rockford 3 | Alverno 1
  • Rockford and Alverno started out going back and forth in the first set, working the score to 14-13. Casey Sheetz had the lone ace in the first series of points.
  • The Regents then went on to take 11 of the next 12 points to finish off Alverno in the first set of play. Della Crain and Alexxana Burton combined for 5 kills on the run and Casey Sheetz recorded her second ace of the set. The Regents won the first set 25-14.
  • The second set was a lot more interesting, Rockford charged forward to get to a 14-7 lead, looking strong.
  • Rockford continued to hold the lead through the rest of the set, but a couple of 3-and 4-point runs by Mount Mary made the set a lot closer. Either way, Rockford closed the door and took the second set 25-21. Nicole Eggers recorded 2 aces in the set along with 4 kills.
  • The third set started with 3 lead changes before Rockford got ahead 10-7; one of the points coming from a Caitlin Hicks ace.
  • Alverno then caught fire and scored 8 points in a row to take a 5-point lead.
  • Rockford rebounded and tied the game later at 20 each, but the Regents only scored one point as the Inferno took the rest to win the set 25-21.
  • The fourth and final set was all Rockford. The Regents started out in front on 6 straight points before Alverno got on the scoreboard.
  • Four different Regents got an ace in the set, with Jasmine Landberg and Brynn Atwell getting 2 aces each.
  • The Regents had their largest lead of the match at 14 before finishing the set and taking the match shortly after, 25-12.
Rockford 3 | Mount Mary 1
  • Mount Mary never held a lead in the first set, despite tying the Regents on multiple occasions. Rockford was unable to pull away until a few short runs that separated the two teams to give Rockford that important first set win 25-19. Brynn Atwell recorded a service ace.
  • The Blue Angels started the second set carrying a steady one-point lead, but then it turned into a series of runs for both teams. Rockford and Mount Mary traded series of points that didn't let up until the end of the set.
  • Later on Rockford put together a 5-point and 3-point run to pull themselves far enough ahead that Mount Mary could not catch them. Mount Mary lost the lead early and then lost the set later, Regents won the second set 25-21. Della Crain helped out the Regents with 7 kills in the set and Melody Moreno had a service ace as well.
  • In the third set, Mount Mary took the lead and never looked back, holding off the Regents and putting together their own streaks of points. They held a 7-point lead towards the end of the set, and despite Rockford's best efforts to recover, Mount Mary sealed the deal and took the third set 25-19.
  • Set number 4 was arguably the best set the Regents played all day. A non-stop barrage of points came over the net as Rockford ran up the score, including back-to-back aces by Brynn Atwell and 3 more aces on top of that, 2 from Nicole Eggers and 1 from Jessica Witkowski.
  • Rockford put the score at 21-9, ready to seal the deal. Mount Mary, however, did not give up easily, scoring another 10 points before the Regents could get their final 4 points to win the match.
  • Rockford sealed the deal on senior day and earned their 1st conference win along with their 3rd and 4th overall wins of the season.
