Big Second Half Lifts Regents to Comeback Win at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Rockford (4-2, 1-0 NACC) outscored Marian (2-5, 0-1 NACC) 40-28 in the second half en route to a 62-56 victory to open conference play on Tuesday night. Statistically, the game was basically a dead heat in nearly every category. However, Rockford had advantages in two key areas that would help propel the Regents to victory. The Regents turned their 17 offensive rebounds into 17 points, compared to just 10 second chance points off 16 offensive rebounds for the Sabres. Rockford also had an advantage at the free throw line. Rockford was +5 at the charity stripe and made as many free throws (15) as the Sabres attempted. Tuesday's win was significant for the Regents, as it marked the first time since 2011 that Rockford won its NACC opener and it is now also the first time since the 2011-12 season that the Regents are over .500 in conference play.

Recap Recap
  • The Regents got off to a slow start, falling behind 11-4 just under five minutes into the game.
  • Rockford was able to get back to within three with 2:30 left in the quarter, after four straight points from Anaya Davis.
  • However, the Sabres closed the period on a 6-2 run, to take a 19-12 advantage into the second quarter.
  • Marian would build its lead up to as many as a game-high 12 point at 26-14 with 4:45 left in the first half.
  • Fortunately, from that moment on, Rockford began to find its rhythm offensively. The Regents closed the half on an 8-2 run, to enter the break only trailing by six, at 28-22. A trio of Regents found the bottom of the net over that span, led by four points from Audrina Terhune
  • The Regents came roaring out of the gates on a 16-2 run over the first 7:52 of the third quarter and took a 38-30 lead. Four different Regents scored during the run, including nine points from Anaya Davis
  • Marian was able to get back within a single point, but Davis sank a pair of free throws to close the quarter and give her team a 40-37 edge heading into the fourth.
  • Rockford would again open the period strong, scoring the first nine points and pushing its lead to a game-high 12 points at 49-37. It was again a combination of four different Regents that accounted for the nine points, led by four from Audrina Terhune
  • The Sabres were slowly able to chip away at the Regent led over the next few minutes, until it was just a four-point game with 2:06 remaining in regulation.
  • Fortunately, Rockford answered by scoring six straight points and forcing a pair of Sabre turnovers, to extend its lead back to ten at 59-49 with only 51 seconds remaining. Audrina Terhune was heavily involved on both ends of the court, accounting for all six points and one of the two Rockford steals.
  • The game was never in doubt the remainder of the way, with Rockford going on to win by a final score of 62-56.
Stat Leaders
  • Anaya Davis continues to be an absolute force both offensively and on the boards. Davis finished with a season-high 23 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She went 7-of-13 from the floor and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Davis rounded out her evening with 4 steals and 1 blocked shot.
  • Audrina Terhune finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 2 seals.
  • Natalie Posadas added 5 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
