Story Links

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University women's basketball team (1-0) earned its first win of the season in stunning fashion with a game-winning shot from Audrina Terhune to beat the Manchester University Spartans (0-1) 83-82. Rockford led for a little over 34 minutes in the game, but faced a 82-81 deficit with 4.4 seconds remaining in the second half. Terhune got the inbound pass, drove into the lane and floated a shot into the net to give Rockford its first 1-0 start since 2008. Both teams shot the ball well (RU - 53.0% MU - 50.9%) but Rockford dominated in the paint, outscoring Manchester 56-34. Terhune secured a double-double with 10 assists and was Rockford's leading scorer with 19 points, including the game-winner at the buzzer.

Recap Recap

  • Rockford caught up and tied the game thanks to the first of four three-pointers by Jocelyn Callahan.

  • The fourth quarter was all about survival for Rockford. The team struggled to hold back the Manchester guards taking drives to the basket, often resulting in points. The Regents had an eleven-point lead going into the fourth, but it was cut down to one point after eight minutes went by in the quarter.
  • With 1:45 left in the game, Anaya Davis made a clutch basket to keep the Regents ahead 78-75, she finished with 18 points.
  • Later, when 29 seconds were left in the game, Roshanda Stevens made a very important layup to put Rockford up by four points 81-77.
  • After a Manchester timeout, the Spartans three-point threat Eva Bazzoni hit a 3-pointer on the left side to put the Spartans within a basket at 81-80.
  • A foul on Manchester and two missed free throws by Rockford gave the ball back to the Spartans, who charged down the court and gave the ball back to Bazzoni who drove into the lane for the layup and the lead, putting the score at 82-81.
  • Rockford took a timeout to plan the Regents next play, and on the inbound at half court to Audrina Terhune, she drove into the lane and on one last-second shot secured a buzzer-beater win for the Regents, 83-82.
