ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University men's volleyball team (0-2) fell 3-2 on Monday night to the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans (1-5). The Regents and Titans were evenly matched throughout the night. Rockford lost the first set (25-20) before winning the second and third sets (26-24), but unfortunately, the Regents dropped the fourth set (25-21) and the fifth set (15-6). Despite the loss, there were a lot of positives to take away from the match. Jett Stewart broke the RU single-match school record with 33 assists. Jeremy Weaver broke the single-match school record with 6 total blocks. James Davenport also set two single-match school records with 13 kills and 43 attack attempts. Matthew Seger tied the single-match school record with 3 service aces. Additionally, Rockford set new single-match school records for kills (46), assists (42), attack attempts (131), total blocks (13) and blocks per set (2.6)
- The Regents got off to a slow start and quickly fell behind 3-0 in the opening set.
- Rockford responded with a 5-3 scoring run of its own, highlighted by kills from Jett Stewart, James Davenport and Connor McNear to cut the Titans lead down to one, at 6-5.
- However, the Titans scored the next three points to extend their lead to 9-5.
- Rockford answered right back with four consecutive points and knotted the set at 9-9. Nathan Vana tallied a kill, while Matthew Seger capped off the run with an ace.
- Unfortunately, Illinois Wesleyan took advantage of a 7-3 scoring run to retake the lead en route to winning the first set 25-20.
- The Regents and Titans traded points in the early moments of the second set, with neither team able to separate themselves.
- Illinois Wesleyan seemed to gain a little bit of momentum midway through the set when the Titans used a 5-2 run to grab a 15-12 advantage.
- The Titans would build their lead to as many as five points late in the set at 22-17.
- Fortunately, Rockford hunkered down and scored the next five points to tie the set at 22-22. The Regents got kills from Jeremy Weaver and Nathan Vana to help lead the charge over that span.
- The Titans would score the next two points to retake the lead.
- However, Rockford scored the next four points, including erasing two set points en route to a 26-24 win. Jett Stewart and Connor McNear each tallied a kill to knot the match at 1-1.
- Illinois Wesleyan once again got off to a quick start in the third set, taking an early 4-2 lead.
- However, Rockford would score five of the next seven points, highlighted by a Matthew Seger kill, to retake the lead at 7-6.
- Rockford's lead was short lived though, as the Titans promptly jumped back in front and led by as many as three points at 15-12.
- Rockford then went on a 6-1 run to regain the lead for the first time since the opening moments of the third set.
- The Titans would answer right back with a 6-1 run of their own to retake the lead at 21-19.
- The Regents and Titans then went back-and-forth trading points over the next few minutes until the set was tied at 24-24.
- Rockford closed the set with a Nathan Vana kill and an ace from Kenneth Lauderdale to take the set 26-24 and grab a 2-1 lead.
- The fourth set was evenly matched until midway through, when Illinois Wesleyan used a 7-3 run to jump in front 19-14.
- The Regents would not go down without a fight though, as they used a 6-1 spurt of their own, to pull back within a single point at 21-20. Matthew Seger led the offensive attack with a kill and an ace, while James Davenport added a kill of his own.
- Unfortunately, the Titans closed on a 4-1 run to take the fourth set 25-21 and force a fifth and deciding set.
- Things did not go well for Rockford in the fifth set, as the Regents quickly fell behind 7-2.
- Unfortunately, Rockford was never really able to recover, falling 15-6 in the fifth set and dropping the match by a final score of 3-2.
- Jett Stewart set a new school single-match school record with 33 assists. He also had 6 kills, 10 digs and 5 blocks.
- James Davenport broke the single-match school record with 13 kills and 43 total attacks. He also added 6 digs and 1 assist.
- Nathan Vana tallied 9 kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks.
- Matthew Seger tied the school single-match record with 3 service aces. He also added 9 kills, 5 digs, 4 blocks and 3 assists.
- Jeremy Weaver broke the RU single-match record with 6 total blocks. He also added 2 kills.
The RU men's volleyball returns to the floor Tuesday, February 23 against Aurora University. The match has a scheduled start time of 7 PM in the Seaver Center.
