Regents Improve to 8-2

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (8-2) swept the Eureka College Red Devils (3-6) Sunday afternoon in five innings for both games. The Regents scored in every inning of the first game to secure the 16-2 victory in five innings. Rockford continued its momentum into the second game, shutting out the Red Devils to win game two 9-0 in five innings. The Regents have improved to 8-2 on the season marking the best start since joining the NACC in 2007.

Game 1: Rockford 16 Eureka 2 (5 innings)

  • Eureka was the first to put up runs, scoring in the first inning from a single to right field.
  • Rockford started with a double by Annaka Bartz in the first inning. The Regents took over, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Emily Cox singled up the middle to score Annaka Bartz. Mikayla Seay roped a double to center field to score Emily Cox. Gretchen Schrubbe singled to right-center to score Mikayla Seay for the final run of the inning.
  • Rylee Klema sat the Red Devils down in the top of the second with a one-two-three inning. The Regents were on fire, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the second. Mikayla Seay hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Annaka Bartz and Gretchen Schrubbe singled through the left side to score Emily Cox.
  • The Red Devils scored its last run of the game in the third inning from a single to right-center to trail the Regents 5-2.
  • Rockford broke it open in the bottom of the third with a five-run third inning. A couple of runs scored on throwing errors in the inning. Annaka Bartz smacked a triple to right-center that scored Jessica Kearns. Mikayla Seay finished off the scoring in the inning with a homer to right field that also scored McCathran Andrew.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Regents put the game further out of reach by scoring six runs. One run scored from a fielding error and another run scored from a hit by pitch with bases loaded. Mikayla Seay and Gretchen Schrubbe hit back-to-back doubles knocking in four runs. Annaka Bartz, Elaine Zimmerman, Mikayla Seay and Emily Cox all scored from the back-to-back doubles.
  • Rockford held Eureka scoreless in the top of the fifth to take game one 16-2 in five innings.

Game 2: Rockford 9 Eureka 0 (5 innings)

  • Rockford dominated Eureka the whole second game, scoring three runs in the first, second and third innings.
  • Mikayla Seay was very efficient in the first inning getting three batters out on three pitches.
  • In the first inning, Annaka Bartz scored the Regents first run of the game on a fielder's choice to shortstop. Michaela Spanbauer hit a single to right-center scoring Gretchen Schrubbe and Emily Cox.
  • Rockford scored three more runs in the bottom of the second from fielding errors that scored Annaka Bartz, Gretchen Schrubbe and Mikayla Seay.
  • The Regents started the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back doubles by Annaka Bartz and Emily Cox's double that scored Bartz. Gretchen Schrubbe hit another double in the inning to score Mikayla Seay and Emily Cox to take a 9-0 lead over the Red Devils.
  • Mikayla Seay struck out the first two batters and got the third batter to fly out to right field in the fifth inning to win 9-0.

Game 1: 

  • Mikayla Seay tallied a career-high 6 RBI's as she went 3-3 with a homer, 2 doubles and 3 runs scored.
  • Annaka Bartz went 2-3 with a triple, a double, a walk, an RBI and 4 runs scored.
  • Gretchen Schrubbe went 3-4 with a season-high 4 RBI's. Schrubbe also recorded a double.
  • Emily Cox went 1-1 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI's and 2 walks.
  • Rylee Klema pitched 5 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 runs with 1 earned, a walk and 3 strikeouts.

Game 2:

The RU softball team returns to the diamond on Monday, March 29 against Mount Mary University. First pitch is set for 5 PM at Sportscore Two.
