Regents Split With Warriors

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team (6-7) split its doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors (3-11). Rockford was trailing the whole first game until it scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth and eventually win 8-7. However, the second game did not go as planned for the Regents as it dropped the second game 6-3. With Christian Dahlstrom earning the save in the first game, he now holds the RU school record for career saves with nine career saves.

Game 1: Rockford 8 Wisconsin Lutheran 7

  • The Warriors were the first to put a run on the board scoring one run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Regents answered with a run to tie it in the bottom of the first when Phil Hyland doubled down the right-field line to score Jordin Lee.
  • Rockford took the lead in the bottom of the second when Ryan Smith scored from a ground out to the pitcher.
  • The Regents lead was short-lived as the Warriors scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran increased its lead 7-2 by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth from a single to right field.
  • Rockford started clawing its way back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to trail the Warriors 7-4. Hunter Fiorito scored from a fielding error by the first baseman and Phil Hyland singled to right field to score Jared Herzog.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran's defense fell apart in the eighth inning allowing Rockford to score four runs. Peyton McCray singled to left-center to score Troy Tucci and Ryan Smith. Jordin Lee singled to left field to score Tyler Peake. The Warriors made a throwing error to prolong the inning and allow Jordin Lee to score for the Regents final run.
  • With the Regents holding the Warriors to no runs in the top of the ninth, the Regents went on to take game one 8-7.

Game 2: Wisconsin Lutheran 6 Rockford 3

  • The Warriors came out aggressive in the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning.
  • Hunter Fiorito got things started for the Regents hitting a lead-off homer to center field in the bottom of the first to put a run on the board.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored again in the second inning from a single through the left side making it 4-1.
  • After both teams were held to no runs in the third inning, the Warriors struck again in the fourth inning with a run scored from a ground out back to the pitcher.
  • The Regents added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Hunter Fiorito singled up the middle to score Troy Tucci.
  • With the score now 5-2, Wisconsin Lutheran took advantage of a fielding error in the sixth inning to score a run making it 6-2.
  • Rockford only scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth but it was not enough as the Warriors took game two 6-3.

Game 1:

  • Christian Dahlstrom received his first save of the season and now holds the school record for most career saves with 9. Dahlstrom threw an inning without giving up any hits, runs or walks.
  • Phil Hyland went 2-5 with a double, a stolen base and 2 RBI's.
  • Ryan Smith went 2-3 with a stolen base and 2 runs scored.
  • Jordin Lee went 1-4 with 3 stolen bases, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
  • Kerrick Jones picked up his second win of the season throwing 3 innings while giving up no hits and no runs on 3 strikeouts.

Game 2:

The RU baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 3 at Edgewood College. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 PM.
