MONTGOMERY, Ill. - The Regents softball team (14-8, 4-2 NACC) dropped both its games on the road Monday, 8-0 and 9-2, to the Aurora University Spartans (19-3, 4-2 NACC). Although Rockford never led in either game, the Regents had numerous chances to score throughout both games, but unfortunately, struggled to come up with a key hit. The Regents left five runners on base in the opener and stranded eight more runners in the night cap. Despite the loses, Rockford is still in a tie for first place in the NACC South Division with both Aurora University and Benedictine University.
Game 1:
- Aurora broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning off a solo home run from Lexie Rayborn.
- The Regents had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the top of the second. Gretchen Schrubbe and Breanna Collins began the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no one out. Rockford would then advance the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately, the Spartans struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
- The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning with another run off back-to-back doubles, to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Regents once again had chances to score in both the third and fourth innings. In both instances, Rockford had a runner in scoring position with one out or less, but the Regents was unable to come up with a key hit.
- Aurora then added another single run in the third off two hits and three runs in the fourth off four hits, to make it a 6-0 game.
- After Rockford went down in order in the top of the fifth, the Spartans scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame and secured the 8-0 win.
Game 2
- The Spartans once again took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
- However, Rockford answered with a single run of its own in the top of the second.
- Breanna Collins and Destiny Kelsey laced back-to-back doubles to cut the Spartan lead down to just 3-1.
- Unfortunately, Aurora responded with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, to extend its advantage to 6-1.
- The Regents again had chances to cut into Aurora's lead in both the third and fourth innings.
- In the third, Rockford got back-to-back singles from Mikayla Seay and Gretchen Schrubbe to put runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately, Aurora retired the next two batters to end the threat.
- Then in the fourth, Destiny Kelsey led off the inning with a triple to right field. Unfortunately, the Spartans were once again able to wiggle out of the jam and keep it a 6-1 game.
- The Regents were finally able to break through with another single run in the fifth. Mikayla Seay got things started with a two-out double to center field. Rockford would then take advantage of a Spartan error to pull back within four, at 6-2.
- Unfortunately, Aurora took advantage of a pair of Rockford errors over the next two innings, to plate three more runs and seal a 9-2 victory.
