LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (14-10, 4-4 NACC) dropped its doubleheader Tuesday night against the Aurora University Spartans (21-3, 6-2 NACC). Rockford struggled the first game getting shutout 11-0 in five innings. The Regents played much better in the second game, losing 8-5 but making a valiant comeback late and giving itself chances to tie the game.
Game 1: Aurora 11 Rockford 0 (5 innings)
- Both teams went down in the first inning without scoring any runs. However, the Spartans put up a run in the top of the second with a single to right-center.
- With the Spartans clinging to a one-run lead, Aurora added on with a three-run third inning from a double that scored two and an RBI single through the right side.
- Aurora scored five more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
- The Spartans ended it in the fifth inning scoring two more runs to win game one 11-0.
Game 2: Aurora 8 Rockford 5
- The game was held scoreless until the top of the third inning when Aurora scored five runs to jump ahead.
- In the bottom of the third, a fielding error allowed Gretchen Schrubbe to score the Regent's first run of the game.
- Aurora added a run in the fourth inning to increase its lead 6-1 over the Regents.
- The Spartans quickly added another run in the fifth inning with a lead-off homer to left-center.
- The Regents began to chip away with a big four-run fifth inning to trail the Spartans 7-5. Gretchen Schrubbe singled to right-center to score Jocelyn Callahan. Annaka Bartz roped a double to center field scoring Mikayla Seay and Breanna Collins. Annaka Bartz came around to score by taking advantage of a fielding error by the left-fielder.
- Rockford had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on second and third with one out but could not get the runs in.
- Aurora scored one more run in the seventh inning taking an 8-5 lead.
- The Regents had another opportunity in its last at-bats in the bottom of the seventh with bases loaded but couldn't convert the runs dropping game two 8-5.
