Big Innings Doom Regents

LISLE, Ill. - The Regents baseball team (8-14, 0-4 NACC) was swept on the road Saturday afternoon by the first-place Benedictine University Eagles (15-6, 6-0 NACC). Rockford fell 8-4 in the opener and then dropped the nightcap by a 10-1 final. The Regents have now lost ten straight road games in the series. 

Game 1

  • Benedictine took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles strung together back-to-back one-out hits, including an RBI double from Damen Castillo to break the scoreless tie.
  • The Regents would answer right back and take the lead in the top of the second inning.
  • Christian Garcia and Troy Tucci each singled to put a pair of runners on base with two outs. 
  • One batter later, Peyton McCray crushed a two-run double down the left field line, to give Rockford a 2-1 lead. 
  • The Eagles would retake the lead one inning later. Benedictine used three hits, including a pair of RBI doubles, to score two runs and grab a 3-2 advantage. 
  • Benedictine then extended its lead to 7-2 with a four-run fourth. The Eagles recorded just two hits in the inning, but took advantage of five walks to plate its four runs. 
  • However, Rockford continued to battle and scored a pair of runs in the fifth to cut into the Eagle lead. 
  • After two quick outs, Zach Hunter and Hunter Fiorito reached via a single and walk. Jordin Lee and Jared Herzog then each drove in a run with an RBI single, to make it a 7-4 game. 
  • The score would remain unchanged until the bottom of the eighth. The Eagles took advantage of a leadoff walk and a double to tack on one final run. 
  • The Regents were unable to get anything going in the ninth and fell by a final score of 8-4.

Game 2

  • The Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after two innings. Benedictine tallied five hits and took advantage of one Regent error to score five runs in the bottom of the second. 
  • Benedictine tacked on another run in the third, despite not recording a hit. The Eagles used a walk, a stolen base, an error and a sacrifice fly to scratch across an unearned run.
  • The Rockford offense finally got things going in the fourth. Jared Herzog broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single, to give Rockford its first base runner of the game. 
  • After an Eagle error extended the inning, Phil Hyland singled through the left side of the infield and Jared Herzog scored on the play after on an error by the left fielder.
  • Unfortunately, Rockford managed just one hit the remainder of the game, while Benedictine added single runs in the sixth and eighth and two runs in the seventh en route to a 10-1 victory.

Game 1

  • Jared Herzog went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. 
  • Peyton McCray was 1-for-4 with a double and 2 runs driven in.
  • Jordin Lee finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Logan List threw 2.2 scoreless innings. List did not allow a hit and struck out one.

Game 2

The RU baseball team returns to the diamond on Sunday, April 18 against Benedictine University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon at Rivets Stadium.
