LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (14-6, 4-0 NACC) won both games against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars (3-16-1, 0-4 NACC) Monday night. In game one, Rockford was in control from the very start scoring three runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to win 9-5. The second game was a different story as the Cougars pitching performed very well holding the Regents scoreless through four innings. However, Rockford took advantage in the fifth inning scoring five runs and that is all it took, winning game two 5-1.
Game 1: Rockford 9 Concordia Chicago 5
- The Cougars took an early lead in the first inning by scoring a run from a single up the middle.
- Rockford answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Breanna Collins smacked a double to left-center to score Michaela Spanbauer. Destiny Kelsey hit a sacrifice fly out to left-field to score Breanna Collins. Annaka Bartz finished off the three-run inning with a single through the left side to score Jocelyn Callahan.
- After a scoreless third inning from both teams, the Regents turned up the heat in the bottom of the fourth with another three-run inning. Breanna Collins hit a triple to start the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice. Annaka Bartz singled to left-field scoring Paige Korsan and Destiny Kelsey scored on a ground out to shortstop.
- The Cougars tried clawing it's way back with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to trail 6-3.
- Rockford continued to pound the ball in the bottom of the fifth with two homers in the inning. Breanna Collins hit a solo shot to left-field and Destiny Kelsey hit a two-run bomb over the left-field fence.
- Concordia Chicago hit another two-run homer in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough to defeat the Regents with Rockford taking game one 9-5.
Game 2: Rockford 5 Concordia Chicago 1
- Game two was a pitcher's duel with both teams going three up three down in the first inning.
- The game was still tightly locked at 0-0 through the second inning until the top of the third inning rolled around when the Cougars singled down the right-field line to score a run.
- The Regents struggled to get much going through the third and fourth innings still trying to get on the board with a run.
- However, Rockford turned it around with a five-run fifth inning. The Regents started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Jocelyn Callahan came up for the Regents and cleared the bases with a big double to right field scoring Jessica Kearns, Destiny Kelsey and Breanna Collins. Emily Cox and Jocelyn Callahan scored later on in the inning from a fielding error by the left fielder.
- The Regents held the Cougars scoreless through the sixth and seventh innings taking game two 5-1.
Game 1:
- Breanna Collins was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Collins went 3-3 with a homer, triple and a double. She also recorded 3 runs scored and 2 RBI's.
- Destiny Kelsey went 1-2 with a homer, 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored.
- Annaka Bartz went 3-4 with 2 RBI's.
- Rylee Klema picked up her sixth win of the season pitching 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 5 runs on 3 strikeouts.
Game 2:
- Jocelyn Callahan went 1-2 with a double, 3 RBI's and a run scored.
- Breanna Collins continued to put on a show going 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
- Gretchen Schrubbe went 2-3 with a double.
- Mikayla Seay also got her sixth win of the season throwing 7 innings, giving up 5 hits and 1 run on 4 strikeouts.
The RU softball team returns to the field on Saturday, April 10 for two games at Aurora University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 PM.
