AURORA, Ill. - Rockford University freshman
Anaya Davis provided one of the most memorable moments of the year on Tuesday night, with her 20-point, 23-rebound performance at rival Aurora University. Davis not only broke the RU single-game rebounds record that had stood since 1997 (22 - Staci Brown), but she also tied the NACC record, which was set back in 2016 (Adriana Ramirez - Aurora). Additionally, she becomes the only player in the NACC-era of the program to record back-to-back 20-rebound games and just the second player in the NACC-era of the program to have a 20-point, 20-rebound game (
Megan Lawler, 01/15/11). As for the game itself, unfortunately, Rockford (6-6, 2-4 NACC) came up just short, falling 74-59 to Aurora University (5-7, 3-3 NACC). The Regents entered the half trailing by just four points, but were outscored by eleven in the second half, as Aurora pulled away late. The difference in the game came at the three-point line. Aurora was red-hot from long range, hitting on 12-of-24 three-point attempts, compared to Rockford converting on just four of its twenty-one three-point shots.
- After falling behind momentarily to start the game, Rockford took its first lead of the day just over three minutes in. Senior Naynay Clark drained a triple to put Rockford out in front by a score of 7-6, with 6:51 left in the first quarter. The Regents would then extend their lead to three points after Audrina Terhune hit a jumper on Rockford's next possession.
- The lead bounced back and forth between the two teams over the remainder of the quarter, with Aurora hitting a three in the closing seconds to take an 18-15 advantage heading into the second.
- Aurora built its lead up to as many as nine points in the second, before the Regents began to mount a furious comeback.
- With Rockford trailing 24-15, the Regents went on a 9-1 run over a span of 5:42 to pull back within a single point at 25-24. Roshanda Stevens led the way with four points, while Evelyn Abundes chipped in three and Naynay Clark added two.
- Aurora was able to build its lead back up to seven points over the next couple of minutes, before Naynay Clark knocked down a triple in the final moments, and cut the Spartan lead to 33-29 heading into the half.
- After Rockford momentarily cut the Spartan led down to two on an Anaya Davis jumper in the opening minute of the third quarter, the Spartans slowly began to increase their lead. Aurora would extend its advantage to as many as ten points in the period and took that same ten-point lead into the fourth quarter.
- With the Spartans still leading by ten midway through the period, Anaya Davis made four straight free throws to pull the Regents back within six at 58-52 with 6:57 left in regulation.
- Unfortunately, Rockford was never able to get any closer than that the remainder of the way, as the Regents fell by a final score of 74-59
- However, there was still plenty of excitement left in the game, as Anaya Davis was closing in on a pair of records.
- Davis would tie the RU single-game rebounding record with an offensive rebound with 2:23 left in the game and then broke the school record and tied the NACC record with a defensive rebound with 1:46 left in regulation.
- Anaya Davis had one of the best all-around performances in recent memory for any Regent. Davis finished with 23 rebounds, 20 points, 4 steals, 1 block and 1 assist for her tenth double-double in 12 games this season. She was also a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Davis broke the Rockford single-game rebounds record and tied the NACC record. Additionally, she is the only player in the NACC-era of the program to record back-to-back 20-rebound games and just the second player in the NACC-era of the program to have a 20-point, 20-rebound game.
- Naynay Clark had her best game of the season as well. Clark poured in a season-high 14 points, had 2 steals and 1 assist.
- Audrina Terhune finished with 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
- Evelyn Abundes added 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist and 1 block.
- As a team, the Regents were absolutely outstanding at the free throw line. Rockford finished 19-of-20 (95.0%) at the charity stripe.
