RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team never trailed in a convincing 72-52 road win over Dominican University. The key to Saturday's victory was the outstanding defensive effort by the Regents. Rockford held the Stars to a season-low 31.0% (18-58) shooting from the floor, including a measly 5.3% (1-19) performance from three-point range. Conversely, the Regents shot 47.7% and had four players score in double-figures, led by 16 points each from
Micah Swanson and
Charles Burnell. The win moves the Regents to 7-1 against the Stars in their last eight meetings.
- Rockford opened the game on a 14-2 run and never really looked back. Charles Burnell scored 7 of the 14 points, including a three to start the game and a layup at the 13:22 mark to give the Regents a 12-point lead.
- Rockford would extend its lead to as many as 15 points at 29-14, courtesy of a 7-1 spurt with 5:22 left in the first half. Noody Lacey scored four of the seven points, with Micah Swanson chipping in the other three.
- However, the Stars would not go into the night quietly. Dominican cut the Rockford advantage back down to single-digits and entered the half trailing the Regents 35-26.
- The Regents again got off to a fast start in the opening minutes of the second half. Rockford scored the first eight points of the period to leap out in front 43-26. Three different Regents scored over that stretch, led by three points apiece from Micah Swanson and Charles Burnell.
- Rockford would eventually extend its lead to a game-high 21 points with 7:31 remaining on a Micah Swanson layup.
- Dominican never got any closer than 15 points the remainder of the game, as Rockford cruised to an easy 72-52 victory.
- Charles Burnell tied for the game-high with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He also added 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.
- Micah Swanson also finished with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He added 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
- Noody Lacey chipped in 13 points on a stellar 6-for-7 shooting performance off the bench. He rounded out his afternoon with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.
- Vincent Eugene added 10 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block and 1 steal.
