Baseball Falls to Bluffton to End its Spring Trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Regent baseball team (3-3) concluded its spring trip with a hard-fought 5-3 loss to the Bluffton University Beavers (3-6). Saturday's game was a pitchers' duel for much of the way, as the Regents and Beavers combined to score in just four of the nine innings. Rockford never scored more than one run in any inning, while the Beavers strung together a three-run third and a two-run fourth to secure the victory. The Regents did however have multiple other scoring chances, but left eleven runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded on two separate occasions.

Recap Recap
  • After two and a half innings where the Regents and Beavers combined for just four total hits, Bluffton scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. The Beavers strung together a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases with just one out. Bluffton then took advantage of a Rockford error, a hit batsman and a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game.
  • However, Rockford would get one of those three runs back in the next half inning. Jacob Stagowski and Neil Freeman each singled and the Regents capitalized on a Beaver error to load the bases with no one out. A couple of batters later, Peyton McCray drove in Rockford's first run of the game on an RBI single. Unfortunately, the Regents were unable to score another run and left the bases loaded to end the inning.
  • Bluffton then proceeded to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning and extend its lead to 5-1. The Beavers used back-to-back one-out singles and a walk to load the bases. Bluffton then scored its first run on a wild pitch and its second on an RBI groundout.
  • Rockford responded again with a single run in the top of the fifth. Tyler Peake led off the inning with a single and then worked his way over to third base on a wild pitch. One batter later, Peake would score on an error and to cut the Bluffton lead to 5-2. Unfortunately, Rockford would again leave the bases loaded to end the inning, as the Beavers held onto their 5-2 advantage.
  • The Regents continued to trim the Bluffton lead with another run in the sixth. Zach Rydell walked and then moved into scoring position on a groundout to second base. One batter later, Jake Bilotta made it a 5-3 ballgame on an RBI single.
  • RU starting pitcher Jared Herzog really found his groove over his final three innings of work. Herzog retired nine of the final ten batters he faced, including the last four, to keep it a two-run game.
  • Rockford's best remaining scoring chance game in the seventh, when the Regents had the tying run on second with two outs. Jonathan Leon singled, and then Rockford took advantage of an error, to put runners on second and third with two outs. Unfortunately, the Beavers retired the next batter to end the threat.
  • The Regents had just one runner reach over the final two innings and fell by a final score of 5-3.
