Regents Fall Short at CUW

MEQUON, Wis. - The Rockford University baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Concordia University Wisconsin. Despite the losses, the RU pitching staff turned in a pair of stellar performances. Tommy Maher started the opener, allowing just four earned runs and tossing the Regents' first complete game of the season. However, the RU offense was only able to muster a pair of runs in the game, and thus Rockford fell by a 5-2 final score. Pitcher Kent Evans Jr. was equally impressive in the nightcap for the Regents. Evans went six strong innings, allowing no earned runs and tying his career-high with eight strikeouts. Unfortunately, the RU defense committed five errors in the game, leading to six unearned runs and a 7-5 Falcon win.

Recap Recap
Concordia Wisconsin 5 Rockford 2
  • Following a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, the Falcons struck first with two runs in the third. Concordia Wisconsin had just one hit in the inning, but capitalized on a walk, a hit batsman and a wild pitch to plate a pair of runs and grab a 2-0 lead.
  • The Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. After a single and another hit batsman, Johannes Haakenson drove in a pair of runs on a two-run double down the left field line and put CUW out in front 4-0.
  • The Regents were able to cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Stejskal and Alex Perez each laced one-out singles to put runners on the corners. One batter later, Stejskal would score on wild pitch, and Perez scored after Jared Herzog singled and the Falcons committed an error to make it a 4-2 game.
  • CUW added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh off two hits and a passed ball, to extend its lead to 5-2.
  • Rockford had one final chance to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Scott Gowan and BJ Graves each singled to put runners on first and second with two outs. Unfortunately, the Falcons struck out the final batter of the game to preserve the 5-2 win.
Concordia Wisconsin 7 Rockford 5
  • CUW jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a pair of unearned runs in the second and another unearned run in the third.
  • The Rockford offense finally broke through with a three-run fifth to tie the game. Jake Bilotta led off the inning with a single and then advanced all the way to third on a CUW error. One batter later, Jonathan Leon drove in Bilotta on an RBI single to make it 3-1. After Ryan Stejskal doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs, Alex Perez drove in Leon on a fielder's choice. The Regents would add another run on a double play later in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Unfortunately, the Falcons took advantage of two Regent errors in the sixth to score a trio of runs and retake the lead at 6-3.
  • Rockford was able to slowly chip away at the CUW lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Jonathan Leon, Ryan Stejskal and Alex Perez strung together three straight singles to load the bases with just one out in the seventh. Jared Herzog promptly drove in Leon on a fielder's choice to make it a 6-4 Falcon lead. In the eighth, Richie Garcia and Malik Abdalla each singled, and then Jake Bilotta made it a one-run game on a sacrifice fly to center.
  • However, the Falcons used three hits in the bottom half of the inning to get that run back and take a 7-5 advantage into the ninth.
  • Rockford was twice able to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth. Ryan Stejskal began frame with a walk, but was immediately erased on a double play. Jared Herzog then singled back up the middle to once again bring the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, CUW retired the next batter to end the game and secure the 7-5 win.
