Baseball Drops Rare Tripleheader at Asbury

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Rockford University baseball team fell 16-1, 4-1 and 10-3 in a rare tripleheader to open the season at Abury University. The first and third games of the day were slated to be nine-inning games with the middle one being a shorter seven-inning game. The Regents fell behind early in all three and were unable to recover. Rockford allowed multiple runs in at least one of the first three innings in each game. The Regents' best performance of the day came in game two, which was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third, before the Eagles plated a pair of run to take the lead. Unfortunately, Rockford could not muster enough offense to keep up with the hot-hitting Eagles and thus dropped all three games.

regent recap
Game 1
  • The Eagles scored in each of the first three innings to blow the game wide open.
  • Asbury took advantage of a pair of walks and two hits to plate two runs in the bottom of the first, despite hitting just one ball out of the infield.
  • The Eagles then tacked on five more runs in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Asbury tallied four hits in the frame, including a triple and two doubles.
  • Asbury continued to pour it on with nine more runs in the third and essentially put the game out of reach. The Eagles pounded out eight hits in the inning, including a pair of home runs, to make it a 16-0 ballgame.
  • Rockford was finally able to get on the board with a single run in the sixth. Alex Perez got things started with a leadoff double. Two batters later, Zach Fabis drove in the Regents' first run of the day on an RBI single to center.
  • Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to score any more runs and dropped game one by a final score of 16-1.
Game 2
  • Game two remained scoreless until the Eagles broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Although Asbury had four hits in the frame, Rockford was able to hold them to just two runs, thanks in part to cutting down a runner at the plate on a first and third double steal attempt.
  • Asbury needed just one hit in the fourth to extend its lead to 3-0. The Eagles singled, walked and then advanced to third before scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Rockford did answer right back with a run of its own in the top of the fifth. The Regents began the inning with a walk and then strung together back-to-back singles from David Wilhite and Zach Duke, with Duke driving in a run to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Unfortunately, the Eagles were able to scratch across an unearned run in the bottom half of the frame and push their lead back up to three.
  • The Regents had just one batter reach base over the final two innings and fell 4-1 to the Eagles in game two.
Game 3
  • Rockford took its first lead of the day with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning in game three.
  • Jake Billota got things started with a leadoff double, followed by a Jared Herzog RBI double and a Joseph Stagowski RBI single to give the Regents a 2-0 lead.
  • Unfortunately, the Eagles answered right back with a 4-run bottom of the first. Asbury tallied four hits in the frame, including an RBI double and a 2-run single, to grab a 4-2 advantage after one inning of play.
  • Asbury added single runs in both the third and the fourth innings to extend its lead to 6-2.
  • Following a scoreless fifth, the Eagles essentially put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth. Although Asbury tallied three hits in the frame, the Eagles scored their three runs on a infield single and a pair of wild pitches to take a 9-2 advantage.
  • Asbury added one more run in the eighth via an RBI double, to make it a 10-2 ballgame.
  • Rockford was able to manufacture one final run in the top of the ninth. Blaise Mace reached via a wild pitch on a strikeout and then worked his way over to third on two more wild pitches. Jake Bilotta then drove in Mace with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Regents were unable to close the gap any further and dropped their third and final game of the day by a final score of 10-3.
