Regents Fall Just Short to Spartans

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University women's basketball team fell 70-60 to the Aurora University Spartans in a Wednesday night conference showdown. The Spartans were in control of the lead for a majority of the game, leading for 34 minutes and 24 seconds, while Rockford held it for just 2 minutes and 57 seconds. Despite this, the game was very tight, with both teams neck and neck in most statistical categories. The biggest difference in the game came from turnovers, with the Spartans able to force 19 turnovers and convert those into 22 points, while Rockford forced 14 and turned those into just 13 points, which ultimately resulted in the 10-point victory for the Spartans.

  • The Spartans opened the first quarter with a 7-2 run, but Rockford followed that up with 10 straight points to take a 12-7 lead. Rockford was led by D'Asia Washington with 5 points during that stretch. 
  • Aurora was quickly able to tie and regain the lead, holding Rockford scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, eventually holding a 19-12 lead after one. 
  • Rockford got a quick triple from Jocelyn Callahan to begin the second quarter to make it a 19-15 game, but Aurora pushed its lead to eight with four straight points in response to hold its largest lead of the day up to this point at 23-15. 
  • The Regents were able to battle back with a 10-2 spurt to tie the game at 25-25 thanks to 8 points from Alyssa Havard during the run. 
  • The Spartans and Regents continued to battle for the remainder of the first half, with Aurora eventually holding a slight 32-31 lead heading into the break. 
  • Aurora quickly took control with a 10-1 run to open the second half that gave the Spartans a 42-33 lead, but Rockford battled back yet again with five straight points to cut the lead to 44-40.
  • However, the Spartans were able to maintain at least a two-possession lead for the rest of the quarter, holding a 51-44 lead going into the fourth quarter. 
  • The Regents quickly cut the lead to four with a Lexi Keating three-pointer to open the quarter, but Rockford was unable to get any closer as the Spartans were able to hold on and make their free throws down the stretch to walk away with the 70-60 victory.
Stat Leaders
  • D'Asia Washington picked up her third double-double of the season and second in the last three games with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Washington also recorded 2 steals and an assist. 
  • Lexi Keating added 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a season-high 2 blocks. 
  • Katie Paredes put up 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block and 2 steals. 
  • Alyssa Havard had 12 points and 4 rebounds. 
  • Jocelyn Callahan tallied 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal and an assist.
