TUCSON, Ariz. - The Rockford University baseball team opened its spring trip on Friday afternoon with a 15-2 defeat at the hands of Saint John's University. Rockford trailed just 2-1 after the first but surrendered nine runs over the next three innings to fall behind 11-1. The Regents added a run in the fifth, but allowed four in the top of the sixth and fell by a final score of 15-2 in seven innings. Saint John's's Joe Becker had a day to remember, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, a home run, 6 RBIs, 3 runs scored and 2 walks.
- The Johnnies opened the game with back-to-back home runs off the bats of Reed Marquardt and Joe Becker to take a 1-0 lead after a half inning of play.
- Rockford was able to cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the first. Joseph Stagowski was hit by a pitch and then scored one batter later on a Kadin Bergstrom RBI double to center field.Â
- Unfortunately, the Johnnies scored nine unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 11-1 lead after four innings of play.
- Becker drove in five of those ten runs with a two-run triple in the second and a three-run double in the third.Â
- Rockford was able to add a second run in the bottom of the fifth.Â
- Jake Bilotta and Joseph Stagowski got things started with back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the fifth. A couple of batters later, Zach Fabis drove in his first run of the season to make it an 11-2 game.Â
- Unfortunately, the Johnnies tacked on four more runs in the sixth en route to a 15-2 win.Â
