Baseball Drops a Nonconference Tilt to #1 UW-Whitewater

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team fell 11-3 Tuesday afternoon to the #1 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. The Regents battled with the Warhawks for most of the afternoon, trailing just 3-1 after the first six innings of play. Unfortunately, eight Warhawk runs over the final three innings gave UW-Whitewater a commanding lead. This was a lead that they would not relinquish, as the Warhawks eventually held on for the 11-3 win over Rockford.

Recap Recap
  • After a scoreless first inning from both sides, the Warhawks struck first with a three-run top of the second. UW-Whitewater got a two-run double, followed by an RBI single to take an early 3-0 lead.
  • Rockford scored its first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third thanks to Kadin Bergstrom whacking his NACC-leading 13th home run of the season over the left field wall to make it 3-1.
  • RU pitcher Arys Gil was able to keep the Warhawk bats at bay over the next three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two over his three innings of work.
  • UW-Whitewater finally broke through for two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to increase its lead to 5-1.
  • The Warhawks added another run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to make it a 6-1 game.
  • The Regents were able to cut the lead in half with a two-run bottom of the eighth. After Jake Bilotta led off the inning with a single and stole second, Joseph Stagowski blistered an RBI triple to left center and Kadin Bergstrom drove him in with a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-3 score.
  • Unfortunately, the Warhawks blew the game open with a five run ninth inning on just three hits, taking advantage of a balk and multiple walks in the inning to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
  • UW-Whitewater was able to retire Rockford in order in the bottom of the ninth, securing the 11-3 victory over the Regents.
