ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University football team hosted the Lakeland University Muskies on Saturday afternoon at Sam Greeley Field. Lakeland got back on the bus with a 35-7 win.
Quarterback
Garrett Weninger made his first collegiate start and finished with 98 yards on 14-of-24 passing.
William Key led the team in rushing with 37 yards on 13 carries.
Malik Gordon rushed for 29 yards on 12 attempts.
Five different Regents caught a pass in the loss.
Timothy Bearden led the team with 6 receptions for 29 yards, while
Nick James and
Connor Willard each had 4 catches of their own.
Joey Alvarez was his usual self in the middle of the Rockford defense, leading the team with 14 tackles.
Napoleon Williams was active all over the field, finishing with 9 tackles and a forced fumble.
Ethan Rager ended with 2 tackles for loss and a sack, making his presence felt from the edge.
Lakeland got on the board first with a touchdown on their second drive. Rockford struggled to move the ball in the first half, heading into the break down 14-0.
Both offenses were stuck in the mud in the third quarter. The Regents were given a lifeline back into the game on a snap over the head of the Lakeland punter.
Fabeous Dowd Jr. jumped on the loose ball in the end zone for what would be the Regents only touchdown of the game.
The Muskies turned it on in the final quarter of action, scoring 21 unanswered points and finishing off Rockford 35-7.
The Regents will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they head to Benedictine University to take on the Eagles at 1 p.m. CDT.
