ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University women's basketball team beat the Marian University Sabres on Saturday afternoon, 60-48 at the Seaver Center.
Katie Paredes and
Te Simpson each put up a double-double in the win, going for 17 points and 10rebounds, and 16 points and 16 rebounds, respectively.
Kyla Wilkerson ran the point effectively, leading the team with five assists.
The first quarter was a tightly-contested, high-scoring affair. We were all tied at 14 before
Nia Wilkerson hit a halfcourt buzzer-beater to end the quarter and put Rockford up 3.
The Regents gained some ground in the second. They reeled off a 10-0 run after being tied at 21. Marian shot it poorly in the period, going 3-17 from the field and 1-9 from three. RU took a 33-23 lead into the half.
The game wasn't over yet. Turnovers plagued Rockford throughout the game, and specifically in the third quarter. The Sabres shot it marginally better and put up an 18 point third quarter to cut the lead to six.Â
In the fourth the game slowed way down. Rockford got the offense they needed, off the back of the Simpson-Paredes two-man game and some timely shots from Wilkerson. The Regents extended their lead to 12 and held on for the 60-48 victory.
The Regents will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they host St. Norbert College at 7 P.M. in the Seaver Center.
